"Creative Topic" #21: Backlog Media
With 2013 ending, some people are
trying to finish their games, reading their books, and getting around to those
movies from the previous year. Now, as a collector I don’t really get every new
thing each year. I get what I can. And yeah, I’ve been getting a lot of things
for awhile for really cheap. With my local Blockbusters closing, Holidays me
getting really good deals, and new gaming consoles to the previous one is
cheaper, I’ve been getting a lot of stuff. And I’m getting stuff when I already
had a backlog of things to do. And I remember back when that wasn’t really a
thing. I used to have skin and bones, and could keep up with anything. But
still, I had a lot of games I wanted to play. And in a way that is a backlog.
But now I have to physically choose what game to play, what book to read. And
when I want to change but can’t, because I made a commitment, I might stop
reading or gaming all together, then I’d get more stuff, and the backlog would
continue, then I’d try that new stuff, and I’d never get back. And in a way
that is stressing. Even back when I had skin and bones that bothered me to
death. A bunch of games I haven’t finished lying around, their sequels coming
out, and stuff like that. And I like getting around to games, that can be fun.
But I realized a long time ago, there’s not much you can do. I do this because
I love it, and when you’re forcing yourself to get through that forty hour
JRPG, or forcing yourself through that boring book series, it can get really
frustrating. And I know I have few books I’ve reviewed, but I’ve started so
many books that I wanted to read and review. So many games I wanted to finish.
But in the end, what hooks me, beats out the rest. And hopefully I’ll get to
the rest. But for awhile I’ll try not getting anything, and getting around to
this stuff. But I don’t want to force myself. I could force myself to sit down
and watch that big Indiana Jones box set that I’ve had for a year (I even tried
once) but that isn’t how they were meant to be experienced. Context matters and
these aren’t chores or things to get around to. These are experiences, and each
one your own. And much like in real life, your experience, isn’t your choice,
even though sometimes you can force it. I’d say just do what you can, because
in the end, you can’t do it all. And that’s a bitter sweetness that a collector
like me has to live with.
Now for kicks, here’s my backlog!
