Episode 61 (Sozin’s Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang) Review
Epic. I could say that a thousand
times in this review, and that would pretty much be a pretty good review.
Anyway, remember when I said shit wasn’t hitting the fan before. No sir, the
fan blew up, and is now covered in beautiful flames. I have to do the quick
summary of everything. First, Azula fights Katara. After Zuko saved her he’s
out. But Katara in a fight that uses more brain than brawn, (hey that’s what
you got to use when you’re fighting crazy people) defeats Azula. And when she’s
just breathing fire out of her mouth flailing in desperation just to do
something, it’s almost as sad as it is rewarding. Because becoming fire lord to
Azula was almost like her getting married. And when she was cutting her hair in
fury, that’s when you know she didn’t quite get what she wanted. Her mother
still never loved her, and she never really showed up Zuko, which is part of
her great goal, to show she was the better child, the one deserving of her
love. And when Zuko stood tall as Fire Lord, you could tell how miserable that
was for her. Then Toph and Sokka do some epic stuff, and come really close to
dying. They still had a fantastic epic scene, and Suki more than proved she was
a Team Avatar worthy member by saving the two of them. Then the big fight
between Ozai and Aang. And holy fucking shit this was epic. The music,
animation, fighting, none of it lacked, and it all went well together. First
Aang was really being cornered. But Ozai accidentally did the one thing he
shouldn’t have, and that was open Aang’s chakras. After that he was Avatar mode
ready, and at that point, Aang hunted down Ozai. And good God, Avatar State
+ Sozin’s Comet = lots of fire. But he really used all elements, just as he
should. And he at one point had another opportunity to kill Ozai, and it was a
pretty satisfying way to do it. He combined four elements into one super move,
but it was cut short just at the last moment. As Ozai fights back, he stops
him. Then some epic color Avatar stuff happens, and Ozai has lost his bending.
Celebration and epic Aang Avatar fixing the fire all around. But then there was
a little cheesy celebration where the others gloat in front of Ozai… only part
I didn’t like about this episode. Then we time skip. First, Zuko and Mai get
together. Ty Lee has become a Kyoshi Warrior. Zuko goes to his father and asks
where his mother is, and some people didn’t like this. But I’m satisfied, even
if I don’t read the little graphic novel that goes into this part in depth. I’m
pretty sure Zuko will find his mother, and that’s closure enough… on that note
I’ll hopefully read the graphic novel and review it. Also Aang and Zuko have a
big ceremony, they hugged, and it was all great. Then of course there was the
big closing scene, Aang and Katara’s kiss. And they don’t say anything. The
music, the way they moved, it more than told enough right there. And even the
costumes as they’re in Iroh’s tea shop, it was just nice. And yeah, this really
got me. Even more than the last time I watched it. Before the Lion Turtle thing
kind of turned me off. But after I thought about the meaning of a show, and how
the idea is bringing balance to this nation that was overcome with this corrupt
family, the idea of just slaughtering Ozai seemed so wrong. And the Lion Turtle
thing, I feel that’s better the more I think about it. I loved the end, I
didn’t feel the feeling of being rushed like I did last time. It ended well on
a entertainment kid show kind of way, and even better, it ended well on a
philosophical art piece to be examined kind of way as well. Every character
finally had their great finale, whether it was Sokka, Katara, Toph, Fire Lord
Zuko, or Avatar Aang.
