"Creative Topic" #9: The Perfect DBZ Game

Within the last couple of years, DBZ games seemed the only new source material for new DBZ fans. I haven’t played all of them, but I still get other people’s impression on them. That being said, although these games are fun and enjoyable, there is always something holding them back, and whenever there is a step forward there is a step back. If there isn’t a story mode, fan boys cry out for a story mode, and they get what they want, but cry out for something else that isn’t right. They’re getting exactly what they ask for, but still not everybody wins. I thought it would be cool to take some time to make what I feel piece by piece would make the ultimate DB/DBZ/even GT game.

Graphics: The graphics usually are something nobody ever complains about. But I want real explosions, something that I complained about in my Raging Blast 2 review. I want it to be cool when the power up, and usually that’s right. But just so this wouldn’t get screwed up while everything else is getting better, I thought it was worth saying.

Collectibles: Each game pretty much has a World Tournament mode, and usually this is a good way to make money. I think each DBZ game should have a currency. The past games you had to actually buy your moves, and I never had a problem with that. They took it out, and I don’t know why. Also anime and plat former fighters don’t have to fall under typical fighting style, and have to set themselves apart a bit, so I think they should all have collectables. Raging Blast 2 had pictures you obtained. If there were things like that I could buy, and obtain through game-play, that would incredible. The Naruto games I reviewed have awesome collectible systems, and that strongly improved those games. If DBZ games allowed me to buy moves, characters, stages, transformations, fusions, pictures, music, figures, footage (in DBZ or just behind the scenes), I would be so satisfied.

Modes: For modes I just want the typical. I wouldn’t mind story, practice, versus, create a character, tower type modes similar to the Tenkaichi games, world tournament, and maybe something new. I think those extra modes we get to play sometimes are usually something that really holds up the games, and modes are really important.

Stages: As the games grew, the stages actually got less and less. I want the old unique stages, I want to fight in space, inside buu, Kame House, and maybe even new ones. Why not King Kai’s planet or the Other World tournament? Why not New Vegeta from Broly’s movie? There are dozens of places it seems to never space there mind, and it really gets repetitive fighting in rocky place, or field, or glacier over and over again. Also, why not make them bigger? It would be amazing if the they took on a full size map, and actually had a scale of a real world DBZ match.

Alternative Costumes: This I think would be a good help. If each character had a good amount of alternative costumes, a lot of people would appreciate it a little more. Like we never have seen Gohan in his school outfit, or why not Goku and Piccolo in the stupid outfits they wore when they learned to drive? There is actually a lot of potential here.

Story: For story I just want a story done justice. A good story mode that is satisfying has been done before, and so it's not the hardest part to knock down. But I would like what-if sagas, moments or storylines that help an individual person, and just capture those DBZ moments.

Game-Play: The game-play I rarely have a problem with, so I’ll just offer areas to improve. First, I think it would help if each character to at least have five moves on hand including there super. Second, I mentioned stages before, but I want the stages to actually feel the fight. I want rocks to shoot up just from powering up, I want the explosions after a super move that actually destroy the planet Budokai 3 style. Also, stages should move into one another if they get hid hard enough into them. Like what if you were on the Lookout and suddenly got shot downwards into Kame house? Or what if Kame house was destroyed, that would be awesome.

Sound: First, I don’t want Kai voices. I know it’s nitpicking, but I just want old voices. As far as music goes, I don’t really care all that much, just make it sound good and I’ll be fine.

DBZness: Some might remember I didn’t give the Character Badge for Raging Blast 2. Usually the story modes are a way to capture that DBZness. But I think little Easter eggs in the game would help. Also, summoning Shenron nowadays isn’t even like a Easter egg, it’s a fill in the blank cause you have to have it, and it never really grabs you. And usually the wishes and animation for it aren’t that good. And why not add a little extra story in some places? Not everything in the DBZ world is talked about, and why not more what if sagas? The possibilities for that are as unlimited as the potential for these games.

For Roster and more: I know I said I want a little too much when I talked about all this, but that’s essentially what all this was. It was a simple I want list, and I don’t really need any of this to be in a DBZ game. I think these are just areas to improve, and that they would really help. I’ll be making a part two to this as I make a wish list roster, so be sure to check that out as well.
