Kingdom Hearts Review

Kingdom Hearts Review
Genre: Action RPG
Developer: Square Enix
System I played on: PlayStation 2
Year: 2002

When I was young, my brother rented a game called Kingdom Hearts. At this point in my life, I was young and close-minded. I rolled my eyes at the Disney aspect, as even though I was a child, I said, "that’s for kids,” and "I don’t know how to play.” Oh, because I couldn’t learn, right! And for all those who are asking, what did you think of the Final Fantasy aspect? Well, I probably would have asked you what the hell a Final Fantasy was. Another thing I personally loved about Kingdom Hearts was it taught me to be open-minded, and that’s something I now appreciate in not only all forms of media, but all forms of life. I loved the game so much I asked my grandma to get it for me for an early birthday present. Unfortunately, that copy as well as all my ps2 games from that time period were lost in the sea of being an idiotic child. Later, even before I was a collector, I desperately regretted ever getting rid of the games. For my birthday my mom got me a gift that cost way more than most of my birthday gifts. She got me a new ps2, and with it a loose copy of Kingdom Hearts, which is the game I wanted with it so desperately. I played until the I got stuck on the boss, but later I came back and beat the boss, but got stuck on the final boss. Then, after what felt like an eternity, I BEAT THE GAME! I already knew what the ending was when my brother played, but I can’t help but love the end again. Kingdom Hearts is one of the games that I know isn’t a ten out of ten game when I’m playing it, but my love for the game on a personal level takes it that far. I still am convinced the second game is the better one, as it had much better story and characters, not to mention better boss battles and gameplay. But this one comes close just for my personal story with it. Whenever I start the game, and hear that KICK ASS OPENING, I feel total nostalgia, and seeing Sora and the others on the island feels like the good ol’ days by itself. The game’s concept is unique. A boy is trying to find his friends, and meets two Disney characters trying to find their king. (Mickey) Doing so they must travel from Disney world to Disney world, and along the way count how many Final Fantasy characters make cameos. The game is a fun ride from start to finish, and the worlds are all different, and filled with lore of the two universes. Kingdom Hearts started a beloved series, one that still holds a mixed fan base. Some Kingdom Hearts fans need to calm the hell down, and some who insult it need to open their minds. I don’t care if it’s rated E, a million great titles are rated E, and the Final Fantasy games would be rated E if it weren’t for the potions they for some reason people think are alcohol reverences. I don’t care if it has Disney characters, and your this huge anti-Disney monster sent from hell to devour those who actually did have a childhood. Just try the game, and you could end up surprised like me. Now, is this game perfect? Hell no. I don’t like Sora’s first voice actor, and to be honest don’t find anything great in his performance in the first game. Also, at some points in this game, you loose interest. Around the time when you finish a world and the only story you get is a keyhole ending, then you’ll loose a little interest, despite how good the game is. I wish each world had just a little more story covering the whole scale of the game. AND I WISH I COULD SKP CUTSCENES WHEN I GET STUCK ON A BOSS! GOD DAMN, I DON”T WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I WATCHED THE TARZAN BOSS VIDEO! But these problems can easily be made up for. I promise you, if you can just grind a little, and get to the end of the game, you’ll have an amazing experience. This is a game that has a mixed fan base, but a lot of products do. Love or hate, you should be able to see why Kingdom Hearts fans like these games. Whether  it’s collecting key blades, unlocking the hidden keyholes, interacting with Disney and Final Fantasy characters, or if its finding this game’s own unique story, you should be able to see why we love the games. The process of every Disney world a huge galaxy, and share the same sky, is one that many wish were possible for other forms of media. Would you like a game where you go from world to world, and each world is a different anime? How about a different movie? A different video game? There are to many to think about, but at least we can do it with Disney movies. There is a great story in this game, great symbolism found all over, and great characters, Final Fantasy and Disney included.

Kingdom Hearts gets a 5/5
Spoiler Info: As with each review, there comes a part where I want to talk about certain parts of the product that I really loved or hated. If you have not played Kingdom Hearts, then skip on ahead. Unless you like spoilers of course.

Spoilers : To start with, the coliseum was always one of my favorite parts of the Kingdom Hearts games. To get through all three, fighting Cloud and Hercules along the way, and then getting to the Hades cup. This takes a attention to detail to a new level. This is one of those games I could go on for hours, and there’s to much to discuss. There are so many boss battles, so many hidden gems, so many little things that it gets ridiculous. After getting through the giant heartless, and Ansem after coming back, I really was happy I finally finished the game. Maybe one day I’ll do a game commentary, one where I play Kingdom Hearts and tell all about each part. But for now, I must regretfully end here.
