That’s My Boy ReviewDirector: Sean Anders, Vanilla Ice
Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg
Year: 2012
Some people can be hard on
movies. I understand movies are art, you expect a level of social commentary or
some kind of value to a movie. But I go to movies to enjoy them. And some
people hate what they want to hate, and some movie critics want to hate movies
that are dumb. So Adam Sandler movies are an easy target. Don’t get me wrong, I
hate Jack and Jill as much as the next guy, wasn’t a fan of either Grown Ups
last time I watched them, and find some movies like Bedtime Stories annoying.
But Adam Sandler has good movies, and then the rest like this fall in that its
pretty good category. But two things stopped this movie from being recognized.
One, it’s come out since Jack and Jill, and at a time where people are just
hating Adam Sandler. Two, the Adam Sandler voice. Yeah, it’s pretty bad. And I’ve
watched this movie twice now, and only the first scene really bothered me with
his annoying voice. Both times I was like, "Shit that’s how he’s going to talk
this movie… this is going to get really annoying.” But surprisingly, I stopped
noticing, and didn’t really care. I’d still appreciate a more normal voice,
maybe just his attitude show his character and not his… shitty voice. But what
can you do. Also a third thing I think people don’t like, the usual Adam
Sandler jokes. You know, like a chick catching a baseball with her tits. Those
kind of jokes. But enough about why other people hate this movie, all the power
to them. I liked some of the jokes in this movie. I loved the fact that Adam
Sandler’s character actually had a beer on him at all times. I love the fact
that one of the two main characters in this movie is named fucking Han Solo. I
love the fact that he has a New Kid’s On the Block tattoo on his back. Also, I
like the Lonely Island, and so I like Andy Samberg. But
I don’t see him in movies that often, so when I can it’s a treat. And I felt
like his character was real. Rarely when a person I know behind a camera is as
famous as they are do I forget it’s them without kind of forcing myself to jump
into the movie. Yeah, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa in High School, take a lesson
from Lonely Island!... on one members acting skills…
okay, maybe not. Another thing, like most of Adam Sandler’s movies, there’s a
cool guest star. And usually that’s in two ways. Some of his movies have a big
cast of guest stars who don’t play themselves (Grown Ups 2, the Longest Yard)
or its one big guest star, like Bob Parker in Happy Gilmore, or Al Pacino in
Jack and Jill. This time he recruited Vanilla Ice… yeah. But it was actually a
pretty good guest performance. You could either hate or love Vanilla Ice and it
would still be pretty funny. And I don’t know much about Vanilla Ice, but since
Stepbrothers, I’ve found the song Ice Ice Baby to be the funniest shit ever. So
for me, very cool guest appearances. And as far as the raunchy comedy that wasn’t
good, it didn’t bother me. They had this stupid thing with the grandma and…
then there was this stripper… I could just do without those things. I will say
I did like the other characters that weren’t over the top. The antagonist, who
I won’t ruin for you, she’s a real bitch, and you are pretty happy when she
gets yours. And that’s what I’m talking about, when the bad guy got defeated, I
felt that happy feeling when bad people get what they deserve in movies. And I
wouldn’t say this movie deserves the Character Badge I give to movies with good
characters on my site, but hell, I enjoyed them. I remember two of the scenes
with Sandler and Samberg having actually kind of nice father and sun moments.
And yeah, so it pulled a pretty damn good movie out. It’s not great, its not
bad by any means though, or at least I thought so.
