Above the Law gets a 3/5
Track four in the Hell the Sequel EP is Above the law, which is one of my more favorable tracks from Hell the Sequel. This is one of the ones with a hook sung by a female voice, which is another unaccredited hook. And like Fast Lane, I think the hook is good enough we should know who delivered it. The hook’s sound is right above monotone, and kind of showing emotion, while also being kind of synthetic. But it works, and it’s one of those songs where the contrast between the hook and lyrics is really good. But the idea was sound really good and catchy, but not too pop sounding, and it did just that. The opening where it’s all staticky, I felt also helped the song a lot. And I remember complaining on a review of Eminem’s recovery the song’s hook and lyrics didn’t fuse at all. And in this they don’t match much, it’s mostly just raw lyricism just added over a nice enough hook. But in this one I got visualization, I could see the song’s hook and lyrics adding up. It didn’t affect me this time, and that’s a good thing. Now as for Eminem and Royce, they’re both really good. Eminem is so into it he almost is yelling, and Royce has tons of energy too. And on loud, it really pumps you up, and the hook doesn’t interfere, it helps actually. As far as lyrically, just raw lyricism. I know in this album they were competing a lot, and I like to compare, but this is one time I think it was about tied. Although Royce’s line with Kanye was pretty good, I’ll probably remember that one for awhile. This track was another good edition to the EP, and although album filler, was that good album filler, you know? It’s a nice pump up song, music video in your head song, and lyricism song. I can’t find much wrong with it, it represents a lot of what I like from this album. Two dope rappers going neck to neck, dope energy, and raw lyricism.
