Death Note Episode 1 Review (Rebirth)

Death Note is a series I’ve recently watched for the first time. (I know I said I would start just watching series and immediately writing a review to save time, but I think if it’s less than forty episodes, it would help my reviews more if I knew what I was talking about before going in) That being said, I fucking loved it, and although it had problems (especially after episode 25) I still really enjoy it. But if you’re unsure of what it’s about, I’ll tell you what you need to know. A small book entitled Death Note drops from the sky and almost carries behind it a giant advertisement saying, "OH NO! A GIANT TOOL OF MASS DESTRUCTION COMING THROUGH! HOPE THERE AREN'T ANY EVIL GENIUSES IN THE AREA!” And of course Light Yagami (that’s right, snicker at what his last name is spelled backwards) and the book says how if you write somebody’s name in it spelled backwards, they will die. And that’s all I think anyone going into this should know, or you could be like me and go in knowing nothing. So watch it, and come back and get the review goodness, and again, these reviews will contain spoilers, as there is no real way to talk about an episode without saying what happened. And in episode one, a Shinigami (a god of death) named Ryuk drops his Death Note (a notebook able to kill people by writing on it) into the human world because he’s bored out of his mind and wants somebody to read it. And Light Yagami, a high school genius picks up an insane amount of power, and to test it out kills a person. Soon he tries it one more time, while witnessing a rape scenario. After that, he doesn’t feel terrible and throw the book down a well, he before was bored out of his mind, and finds killing criminals a duty, and a obsession. After five days he’s already written tons of names, and that’s when he meets Ryuk, who explains since it’s his book, he must stick around with him. And that’s when evil mastermind over here declares he will become a new god of the world, and will decide the justice of others. Evil Ryuk who looks bat shit crazy just by appearance looks like he’s saying, "dafuq?” And that’s where the episode ends. The idea was just twisted, and even if you feel completely against Light’s ideas (I know I think the most fucked up thing ever, and am completely against it) it almost feels like you’re taking into thought like it’s the death penalty. As far as character development goes, episode one and Light is a hundred percent different already. And as far as Ryuk goes, just look at him, and that’s enough personality for you right there. (He’s creepy as hell) And in the end, this was the beginning, and the first step into what becomes a giant mind fuck of a situation. But I do want to show this to people, and introduce them to Death Note, but it dives in so quickly into that that I’m hesitant. First thing you see is a Shinigami world filled with people who look like Ryuk, and that’s enough for me to feel like a creepy emo kid when I want to show somebody it or recommend it. Anyway, the episode I thought was really good, and an excellent way to start a series.

Death Note Episode 1 (Rebirth) gets a 5/5
