Mortal Instruments meets Twilight, the end.

hush, hush gets a....

Okay, fine. hush, hush, the title that refuses to capitalize itself is the beginning of the hush, hush series. And I dove in pretty much blind with nothing but that amazing cover art. Because looking at the entire series, one thing it has going for it is amazing cover arts. As for the book... eh. Okay, I will say something positive off the bat. This book had me turning pages. But like Twilight, the mysterious teasers that kept me turning pages ultimately didn’t lead to much of anything, and it seemed more focused on wasting time. Like Twilight the plot that I considered plot was far too long and what I think it considered plot was mostly just small events that happened in between these characters doing jackshit. That’s fine, but only if I like the characters and... let’s move on to the characters! First, there is Nora, our main protagonist. She starts the book fine, I’ll say that. She had some spunk, it’s also in first person so you got some more realistic lines of dialogue. (But let’s be honest as a teenager I found most of these lines either way too cheesy or the feeling an adult was thinking how we talk nowadays) The problem with her character is she feels completely unoriginal. I am hardly into the supernatural romance genre, and just by touching the surface I feel like I’ve seen her. She’s smart, has good grades, vulnerable, but still retains a somewhat tough attitude that keeps her tsundere thing going on. But she literally feels like a cardboard version of characters I already hate or love. That’s fine, just do a thing or two to make yourself cool, but she doesn’t. Then she like Twilight meets her romance in class, and like Mortal Instruments he’s a smart mouth pretty boy. See the trend here? And the romance character Patch, he’s cool. He’s smart mouth, but I already read the Mortal Instruments, and he’s if anything just a really boring Jace. He doesn’t do anything knew by having an original personality, something interesting in the romance, or God forbid not be these sex God that’s almost a necessity in the genre. Ultimately he’s a more boring version of a character I do like, and just not as annoying as some other characters in the genre... I’m trying to stop referencing Twilight in this review. Anyway, side characters from that are pretty small. There’s a possible side romance with this guy named Elliot, a mom (who of course disapproves of Nora’s romance, like that’s never happened before) a random maid, a cliche bully, a school counselor, and then good old Vee. Vee is the really the only character I enjoyed. She was fun, she was naive but not dumb, and every scene she was in I enjoyed. Her aura improved the book. Anyway, aside from that, the book didn’t have much going for it. It was just another book with just more characters and didn’t hook me to read the next book at all. (although I will read, already cracked it open) And I remembered Twilight, and it really hit a low score with me because it pissed me off so much. But with this... I’m giving it a low score because it really just didn’t have anything. After hundreds of pages I’m left with little to nothing but an average book. I enjoyed it while I was reading, but when it finishes, it leaves an underwhelming sigh.

hush, hush gets a 2/5

Spoilers: Yeah, that school counselor. Don’t know why I didn’t suspect her, it was some pretty obvious bad guy vibes. But yeah, it was a nice twist. And I liked Patch’s angel back-story but it was so... underwhelming. And Nora seemed so accepting of it, it was just so... whatever about it. As for the big reveal, yeah, it got me. I mean it better have, the story seemed determined to make sure you don’t guess that ending. I will say making Chauncey the ancestor and all that, it was really good. But... not worth hundreds of pages.
