 Episode 17 (Welcome to Happiness!) Review

 

Well, that’s a nice fucked up title for ya. Anyway, like in the last episode, Sato got a call from his high school buddy… er, more like random chick he didn’t get along well with. But dammit if she didn’t want to talk with him. She has “offer” for him he can’t refuse, and they go far out of the way to this random building where they get a lecture by this rich old guy, and of course other people who are apart of this program selling random shit. And it doesn’t take Sato long to figure out this is a pyramid scheme, and he slips out the back. Then he and Megumi (the high school chick) have a big confrontation. They argue about what Megumi went through, and how she’s stuck in this scheme. Then it goes a little further and she says how society depends on people like Sato to say they’re better than, and how Sato doesn’t have to put up with that by fulfilling his dream. How alongside Megumi he will take the world by storm. And yeah, he gets sucked in. He goes back to the apartment with this big cheery attitude until Yamazaki points out he did actually get thrown into a pyramid scheme. And it dawns on Sato in another moment of his weakness. And I remember just going through my head wondering what was going on when I saw this episode the first time. Wondering where they were taking this character, and just thinking how Sato got thrown into this. And I knew little about pyramid schemes at the time, and this kind of gave me a powerful lesson on the topic, and I’m glad to have this lesson to this day. Anyway, another great episode, and another fun topic! Yes! Pyramid schemes! The very antithesis of happiness!
