Episode 29 Review (Bitter Work)

Avatar: The Last Airbender Episode 29 Review (Bitter Work)

This episode might as well be called "Training Day.” First we’ll get the Zuko part. He is trying to learn how to bend lightning, which fails pretty quickly. So Iroh starts teaching him an entirely new move Azula doesn’t know, and says more about all four elements, and gives us a little bending history. Zuko asks why, and he says knowing about all four can make you a better bender, and that this one move came from waterbending. And the move turns out to be a way to redirect lightning that has been shot at you. After Zuko learns, he expects Iroh to use it on him, but Iroh says that’s crazy, and he shouldn’t ever have to sue the move. So Zuko goes on his own to a giant cliff during a lightning storm, screaming that he’s always had things thrown at him, and why not now. And the episode ended with Zuko bellowing at the stormy sky. Meanwhile the gaang is trying learn Earthbending. And Toph basically is a hard ass teacher. She is what Earthbending represents, a big ass wall that you can’t get across. And because Aang usually runs away from giant walls coming at him, he’s having a hard time. So then they separate to find Sokka whose been lost, and by lost I mean got himself stuck while searching for food. (who by the way has his most funny episode in a long time, really getting these really funny stand alone scenes) Then Aang runs into him. But he can’t help him, because he can’t Earthbend him out of there. So then the mother of the little lion… moose… bear… thing….whatever! The mother of the thing attacks Aang, and he tries to run away or divert it, but he has to face it head on, Earthbending style. So Toph who was watching this just claps. Didn’t bother helping, that’s okay. Then she gets Sokka out, and Katara asks if she went light on him, and she lies and says yes, and we know that she did the smarter thing. And yes, that’s the whole episode basically, and it’s a good one. We learned much more about the elements, and we had a needed training episode, you know really give us that feeling that Aang is learning. And Zuko, damn, it just gets worse for him every episode! And his hair is coming in, it really is. He looks cool. And more Toph, I always like my favorite character getting attention. It really is going in such a nice blend, where everything falls into place a lot nicer than it could. Introducing a major new character while also keeping the Zuko thing going alongside the usual, it’s tough, really. Or is it tough? Eh, anybody? No… okay. Anyway, great episode.
