Episode 20 Review (The Siege of the North (Part 2))

Episode 20 Review (The Siege of the North (Part 2))

And with that we have our finale. Before I give my thoughts on it all, I’d like to tell everything that happens. First, we get up close with the spirit world, and it is drugs. Straight dugs. There are monkeys, Roku talks to Aang through a pond, and there is this weird monster. It takes people’s faces, and if Aang shows any emotion, he’ll take his. Great idea, and kind of a really stand out character but Aang gets past. Don’t know why he’d give Aang that info so easily. And he’s just like, "We’ll meet again…” Legend of Korra Book 2 anybody? It’s called spirits! I have my first speculation! Anyway, back in real world where there’s still shit going on, the others find Zuko and Aang’s body who had been held in a cave because of a blizzard. And because it’s night time, Katara whoops some Zuko ass, and Aang saves his life by not letting him freeze to death in the cold. And of course Zhao and the fire nation are going ape shit on the water tribe. It’s not an all out war, we don’t see waterbending masters versus firebending elites, but you do get some cool shit, there’s even a fucking tank that gets cut in half. Yeah a tank getting cut in half by water. But Zhao who’s becoming such a glorious dick, he’s so full of himself, he just nonchalantly kicks the jerk boyfriend character aside into obscurity. Then he tells Iroh how he found a library (episode in second season goes deeper on this) and how it told him the moon spirit lives in the real world, and it can be killed. So Zhao goes and finds the spirit, and although Iroh steps up and is like, "Bro, that’s the moon!… who are you Piccolo?” But Zhao puts it back in the water… TO BLOW IT TO HELL! Yes, the moon is gone, and never will be seen again. Until a forced plot line saves it. Yes the princess literally on the way there during the war tells how the moon spirit gave her life, and then she gives her life to save the moon spirit. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, and the princess was never much more than a plot device. The whole romance was kind of… flip flop. I do care, they do make you care about how she gave her life, but it wasn’t really all there. And it’s done soon afterward. But fucking Aang gets his ultimate Deus Ex Machina of the Avatar State, and destroys. And I know I just kind of insulted it, but this is one of the best ways to work a deus ex machina plot device. He just learns thousands of ancient moves of his past lives, which would make sense to be living inside of him. And so it’s no surprise when he turns into a giant water monster, and destroys the fire nation. Yeah, that monk who won’t kill anyone, he killed people. They’re going to dumb it down, and technically he couldn’t do anything about it, but he killed them. And he gets Zhao, who was fighting Zuko. And he won’t even grab Zuko’s hand to save him, just slapping Zuko across the face with more he’s a failure. And then we get our epilogue with Katara being declared a master, the slight morn for the dead girl, and just that good feeling. Then we see Azula, our new villain, who we can tell by Zuko talking before, is the going to be bad ass. And she is. Anyway, Avatar always kind of has finales that are kind of too much. They just have so much going on, and they all feel rushed. Each finale is like this, and I’m not saying that to bash this episode. Hell we got more spirit world, non stop action, people died, (on a fuckin’ show on Nickelodeon) and my favorite part, Avatar State Aang. I like the character development, and I like how it was on paper. Zhao went from who cares to, wow, I kind of thought that was a pretty cool villain. Everyone was on their top game, aside maybe from Sokka who was busy making out with the moon. But still a great way to end the season, just a more clunky pacing. That face thing, that should have had an episode instead of the other "filler,” before. But all in all a great end to a great season, but now things are going to go uphill from here.
