Episode 33 (The Drill) Review

 Episode 33 (The Drill) Review

So this episode we have a giant drill coming into Ba Singe Se, and the Boomerang Squad has to stop them. And usually this is the part where I tell what happens, give some commentary with a joke, and just get the idea of what happened. In short, giant epic drill attacks giant epic wall, Aang and the others stop it. Oh, and Jet finds out that Zuko and Iroh are firebenders by Iroh heating some tea. But first I’d like to talk about filler. This episode, aside from that little tea portion, which is probably the most uninteresting part of the episode, is what people consider "filler.” And filler has many definitions, most being a part of the story that doesn’t advance or move forward. A detour if you will. And when people say filler, they use it as insult, which I don’t agree with. Filler can be good. Mostly it’s just a timewaster that strays from the manga. But in stories super long, and not as fast pace as a manga, it can be good, they usually just use that time on nothing, which can be annoying. This is not filler, and helps the show. The story of Avatar is about going to exciting places, having great fun scenes, and detours that make good episodes for television. So yeah, it helps the story, just not by your definition. Just because Avatar goes into circles of anime, and their hate for filler makes them stick their nose up at anything filler doesn’t mean this is a bad episode. And good God, this is a fun awesome freaking episode. Like a normal person in a fight, they take this thing out with philosophy. They get it off balance, then deliver a final blow. And Azula and her minions get some attention they deserve, it’s amazing. And there are times I’m like, "Why can’t I just get a bunch of bending fighting in an episode.” And I got that, and it was really cool. Not to mention how good this episode was on an entertaining factor. Some kid watching a random episode of this on Nick would be having so much fun with it. I love the areas in Avatar, and a colorful excellently animated episode like this give it so much more flavor. You’re in this drill, outside it, on the wall, and it’s really cool. The drill itself is cool. Not to mention this gives us more of the characters. And it’s not just more, these episodes I feel are so great for the series. They’re not being formulaic with their story, they’re doing it how they want it, which I feel is so helpful for it. As far as the Zuko and Jet part, I don’t really care as much. The whole Jet/Zuko thing was a kind of cool thing, but it was a little sloppily dealt with. It’s all right, but I don’t think it was a highlight for the series, especially since Jet I don’t even know if he’d make my top twenty characters. But yeah, fantastic episode, I love it to death. Also, Aang didn’t go Avatar State when he was about to die, which I feel helps his whole state. It’s not a deus ex forced transformation, it’s actually part of his character for the sake of being a part of his character. Then he ran up a wall and slammed down on a rock collapsing a drill, yeah, it was awesome.
