Horrible Bosses was a movie I
missed, and then became one of those movies you get in a big pile of new movies
you get. Ever have that happen? I know not everyone collects movies, but
sometimes you get a bunch of movies, like my most recent black Friday at
Wal-Mart. Yeah, that happened to me, and in my group was Horrible Bosses, which
I got on recommendation. And yeah, it really could have been either way. But I
was pleasantly surprised. Horrible Bosses follows three friends, who all have
shitty jobs. One, who has that asshole. That asshole boss that you find so
despicable. Then the other one is the son of a boss that recently died, but his
son is a "dipshit cokehead.” And then lastly, Jennifer Aniston plays a rapist…
yeah. And she basically is a role reversal of a sexual harassment boss, but is
a woman. And Charlie Day works for her, and he can’t quit because he’s
mistakenly is on a sex offender’s list… and is now getting practically raped by
Jennifer Aniston… life is funny, isn’t it? Anyway, they decide to kill their
bosses. Yeah, kind of a fucked up premise, but they dodge it pretty nicely.
Never in their mindset do they actually seem like they’re going to go through
with it, and in the end the movie is suppose to be a fantasy "fuck your boss,”
kind of movie. And I’ll admit it’s pretty funny. Everyone seems to be having
funny, although no jokes made me burst laughing or I remembered even off the
top of my head, they were still chuckle worthy. And yeah, they had three arcs
going with each boss, and how they’d get rid of them. They had funny little
things with characters like Jamie Foxx’s character Motherfucker Jones. Guess
how he got his nickname? He went into his mother’s room while she was dead
drunk, and stuck his hand in her… purse, and then stole all her money. Entire
paycheck that week. Really fucked her over. Okay, never mind, that was the best
joke in the movie, and worth remembering. Anyway, part of the idea is none of
these characters can leave their jobs. But at one point the cokehead boss is
having like a party in his office, and there are some drugs involved, and I’m
like, "Yo, call the cops. Done.” But for how many plotholes they’re could have
been made for something like this, they closed a lot of them. And I like the
characters, and I liked the humor. Although I will say my least favorite thing
about this movie. It feels very throwaway. Just wants to get through itself. I
mean, I feel like nobody tried their best. Everybody tried, just nobody
actually went all out. The three main characters for instance, I couldn’t see
them being friends in real life. Charlie Day’s character looks way younger than
the others. And the movie seems to end as quickly as possible. It’s a see once
and never again movie, which is fine but… nobody loved this movie. I mean, it
got good reviews, but for me, I can’t see myself after this review ever coming
back unless it’s years down the line. It’s very… likeable. But likeability does
not make a movie great, and this movie to me is not great. It’s good, and
that’s about it. It gets a check mark, a star for doing its job. But like the
lazy guy at the office you kind of want to scold it… maybe this is how mean
bosses are formed. Anyway, good movie, worth seeing.
