All right, I haven’t yet reviewed a song by Drake, so maybe I should give a little of what I think of him. I don’t really like him in all honesty. Although some songs are pretty damn good, the majority aren’t, and he falls a lot under commercial hip-hop with too much bragging and too much nonsense. As for lyrical skill personality and character, he’s just average to me. He kind of fits whatever he goes into, whether it’s a pop song, a bragging song, or whatever else. And awhile back I got a bunch of different Young Money songs, saying I shouldn’t completely judge something I haven’t gone in depth with, so I’ll start with this. Marvin’s Room gets the name from the recording studio it was recorded in, and the recording studio is named after Marvin Gaye. And the song is actually about something… sort of. It’s a drunk dial from Drake to his ex who is currently in a relationship with a good guy. And at first when the chorus hit and it was all "Fuck that guy, I’m better!” I found it more bragging and childish. But this being a drunk call kind of gives it a valuable excuse. It would say he normally is "if she’s happy, then I’m happy.” But then when he’s drunk, like many other people drunks, the truth comes out. And apparently the truth is he’s a butt hurt asshole who thinks he’s better than a chicks who apparently treating her better… yeah, sounds like Drake. All right, I’ll get the good out of the way. First, the beat and sound sync well, and all lyrics aside, that makes it feel more impact. And it captures a theme, because it really feels like you’re apart of some vague confusing drunk call, you know except with good sound instead of weird background noises. And I do wish there were more songs like this to show rappers who make a lot of bragging swag songs (Drake is in this group) also kind of contrast those songs with songs like this. And this isn’t emotionally ground breaking, and I don’t even consider this much of a song, but it’s definitely not a bad song either, and it has good. Now for the bad. First, this song is a little bit pointless. It’s a drunk call, he gets mad, invites her to fuck, she says no, then there’s a random ending where he’s in a bathroom holding her hair back, and there are white people using the n word. Yeah, the big conclusion was him hearing a white chick using the n word, and he’s hoping nobody heard it. And the outro made it sound like he said something so deep and impact, it was actually kind of funny to me. And I would say he’s not really making any good lines, but with emotional slow songs, I don’t really care if he’s being a lyricist. But that the thing, this isn’t that emotional as it’s making itself. The beat, the sound, it makes it feel like there’s some bigger picture hidden underneath, but there isn’t really anything. And there are lines where it’s like, he’s really just rapping about how awesome he is. Who calls their ex-girlfriend and says he had sex four times this week. Sure he says sorry at one point, and is showing how he kind of feels like a man whore, but when you’re quickly asking if she’ll meet up, instead of just not involving sex in this little drunk call, you still look like a man whore. For all we know this was a booty call, and you were just trying to get laid with your ex, and there is absolutely no deeper feeling or meaning at all. And I know the song is suppose to be kind of vague, I don’t have a problem with that, but have a solid part where it clears. Like that stupid outro, was that a memory? Or did she come to club and get drunk? If so, oh my god, Drake held her hair back, what a gentlemen! He deserves boyfriend of the year for that one. And is the song suppose to be relatable? Is the song suppose to have dudes remember girls they wish they hadn’t let go while girls think he’s more of a heartthrob? Well, he kind of kills that with lines where he says he’s calling the chick up because all the other bitches in the club left. As far as the music video goes, it’s more of a promo. It doesn’t help the song, it just is there, and isn’t really anything. It didn’t need a video, and I’d rather it didn’t. All in all I don’t think is at all a bad song, in fact it got better over time. But these songs are where Drake is suppose to prove to me he isn’t just a commercial rapper who brags about bitches, and makes something more thought provoking, and he didn’t. He just made this, an average song with ups and downs.
