Super Smash Bros. Melee Review

 Super Smash Bros. Melee Review
Genre: Fighting
Developer: HAL Labratory
System I played On: Gamecube
Year: 2001

As a child with a Gamecube, I hadn’t had a lot of games for the system. But one of the few I did have was Super Smash Bros. Melee, which I believe is a must own for the system if their ever was one. As years went on, and I became a collector, there were some games I wanted to own and play again. Unfortunately my Gamecube broke at the wrong time. So I saved some money and bought a whole new Gamecube for thirty bucks,  mostly just to play Super Smash Bros. again. And I had a blast, but I just couldn’t get Mewtwo, and couldn’t finish the game. But now I finally got him, and have been playing a lot of multiplayer with my cousins lately, so I finally am able to do a review. I’ve stated before I don’t really like multiplayer games. There are plenty of games I’ve reviewed without even touching the multiplayer, and likely never will. (Bioshock 2, Farcry 3, etc.) But games like Call of Duty and others I realize I can’t review without playing multiplayer, and the same goes for Smash Bros. But the multiplayer for Smash Bros. I actually love, and is probably my favorite multiplayer ever. Unlike Call of Duty or other games your not playing online, your doing it the best way multiplayer can be played, with people together playing. And it’s so fun. I’ve played a lot with my brother, friends, cousins, pretty much anyone who wants to play it, I’m up for it. Doing matches as your favorite characters with a stock of lives or time limit are amazingly fun, and there’s at least five hours of multiplayer for the average player. And single player is still amazing. The events are fun, and although you might be pulling your hair out, it’s worth it in the end. Also there are three main modes, Classic, Adventure, and All-Star. Each are really fun, and you’ll be complete each mode with each character, which surprisingly isn’t repetitive, and will last awhile. Not to mention getting the characters in the levels while also collecting trophies and money to buy trophies will provide enough content and entertainment to beat just about all fighters. The single player isn’t amazingly great, but would make it a great game even without the multiplayer. Not to mention the trophy system. Anime fighters and Smash Bros. I actually like more than the traditional fighters because of things like shops and trophies. The trophies are on the best in game collections in history, and provide a whole data base on Nintendo game history. It’s easily one of the best aspects of the game, and is also one of the most memorable. Speaking of Nintendo fun, it’s covered in this game. I hadn’t played the Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, so this was the first time I saw all the Nintendo characters come together for the ultimate clash. In the end it sounds like a fairy tale game that would never happen, which just adds to what your seeing. You get to see Pokemon vs. Mario characters, Legend of Zelda characters vs. Star Fox characters, and the list of fun you’ll have with it all is so much fun. Each of the characters are fleshed out like a normal fighter, and although they resemble each other in some fighting styles, they’re all actually really even and I feel put perhaps more time into than a normal fighter. Each character is actually really good, and although some characters you look at and think bad, with enough training those characters can beat the best characters. I think the Ice Climbers suck, but I still ended up winning a fight I couldn’t win with any other character, even my best character. (Captain Falcon for the win!) Anyway,  the character roster I could use a the whole review space for itself, and is ultimately a powerhouse of a roster. A part of me thinks they should have added more, but in the back of my head I know it’s fleshed out, that’s just me wishing for more than there already are. In the end Smash Bros. is a total elite, easily. It has a single player that has you on a Nintendo filled adventure with every character, going through events and mutli-man fights that will last hours of fun.  The single player is just as good if not better than the single player, and is currently my favorite game to play with friends. Not only that but you have the nostalgic aspect of seeing these characters, and just all these characters come together. Plus it pokes fun at some things that other Nintendo games don’t do. Like when you play a Mario game, it never pokes fun at the idea of Luigi coming in and destroying Mario for the spotlight. But it does in this a couple of times. Also there is the trophy system, which is one of the best in game collections of all time. I haven’t played Super Smash Bros. Brawl yet, but if it’s half as good as Melee, I can’t wait. In the end Smash Bros. Melee is my favorite fighter, my favorite multiplayer game, and one of the best games for the Gamecube. It’s a must own, a must play, and a need for any Nintendo fan.
