Episode 1 Review (I Choose You!)
Episode 1 (I Choose You!) Review
Nostaliga is a funny thing.
Anyway, I should begin this with my background, and then a very quick synopsis
of Pokemon. (You probably already know Pokemon if you’re reading this) Anyway,
I watched Pokemon as a kid, tabbled in the games, but never became a big fan. I
mean I was fan with how most things I was a fan of as a kid, I just really
liked it. I watched some VHS tapes, sometimes caught it on TV, and that was
about it. I never beat a game or anything though. However, then I became a
smart mouth pre-teen, and suddenly Pokemon was, "stupid,” "gay,” and other
terrible insults only a third grader could come actually use seriously. Then
later, my brother started playing the games again, as many people did. I was a
bit of a trend as now the generation who watched Pokemon started becoming
teenagers who stopped caring. And that’s what I did, even though I still felt
Pokemon was for children. That changed, and thus the Pokemon master in me was
born. Playing through multiple games, and even bought some of the VHS tapes,
even though I’ve yet to watch them. I did see Pokemon Origins, but not any of
the original anime. I was afraid to review this, as there are many episodes,
and I have enough series that need reviewing. But now that Netflix has
graciously brought me some Pokemon in front of my face, maybe I can get through
the first season, A.K.A., the Indigo League. As for synopsis, there is a world
of magical little monsters that the main character Ash must catch, and it is his
dream to catch them all. So in order for that to happen he must meet many
friends, waste so much time, and fall into some adventures… and by some I mean
over eight-hundred and counting… holy shit I’ll never review this entire damn
show. But anyway, the first episode. This is pulling up the roots of nostalgia,
and sometimes you see some very ugly things that way. But the show didn’t get
too childish, and I’m enough of a manchild where I can watch this without face
palming myself. And some are so little kidish, it’s funny, like Gary. Just his voice
(watching English dub, as I must for obvious reasons) is fucking hilarious. He
has cheerleaders and… who the fuck who come see an asshole ten year old get a
Pokemon? And what ten year old has cheerleaders? Anyway, the most classic stuff
happened in this episode. Ash’s beginning, where he got Pikachu, where they
bonded by hating each other, where they met Misty, where Ash started his first
attempt at Grand Theft Bicycle. A lot happened, and it was all very enjoyable.
Not to mention that touching ending with Ho-oh lighting the sky. It put a
certain warmth in my heart. Compared to other shows, I’d maybe give this for a
show, but my score kind depends on the show’s overall quality, and what I
expect. And considering the later season’s quality, I don’t expect very much,
and the first season you might see more fours and fives. And this easily is a
five considering. Anyway we’ve started something that may very well take years
upon years to finish, and that’s if the show’ll ever be done in the first
place. But we must start somewhere if we want to review them all.
