Young, Wild & Free gets a 4/5
I’ve said before I don’t like music with bad messages, that being songs where the rapper is telling you about his bitches, his drugs, (usually bud) and his money. And you know what, I do. I hate the fuck out of them. But there is a big line between some of these songs. And here is my take on it. If your going to make a weed song, make a weed song. Don’t have lyrics about how awesome you are because you smoke, or how much weed you smoke, or how better than everyone you are because you smoke. Songs like Kid Cudi’s Day N Night, Eminem’s Must Be the Ganja, I like these songs despite them being about bud, and  I could name probably a dozen more, and this is one the list. This isn’t a weed song, this is capturing the good harmless fun of smoking, chilling at high school, and getting in weird situations you’ll laugh at later. Whereas some weed songs the song is flexing how bad ass it is, this one is chilling, capturing a strong theme. And I love Snoop, and although I don’t exactly find Wiz great, my brother actually likes his music a lot, and songs like this I like from him, despite he’s been known to do the bad of weed rapping of what I’ve said. Although Snoop has before, but then again it’s always excusable, and never like the nowadays rappers. Anyway, let’s get Snoops part out first. I think he’s easily the best on the song, despite this is as much Wiz’s song as it is his. But his lyrics are much more chill, and he’s just way more likeable. He seems to be way more cheery and happy, and I could feel a smile on his face while he was recording. As Snoop style, he hits every syllable skillfully. And whenever I see a person in a certain stage, I call them a Snoop Dogg character. And those are the people in the industry that truly don’t give a fuck. Not in a tough way… they just don’t care. And they like Snoop sprinkle themselves anywhere, but they aren’t aggressive in their talent because… they don’t have too. Their A game has been brought, and although they redeem their talent with what they do nowadays, they aren’t going a hundred percent, and feel confident leaving the industry tomorrow, but don’t, and show up when we miss them the most. And yeah, I’d say Snoop killed it, but he didn’t, that’s a terrible way of looking at it. He chilled with it, smoked a blunt with it, and invited it to be in his movie. And yeah, Snoop clearly somehow fits into a song called Young Wild and Free despite being middle aged… ah, your as young as you feel, and that being said, he might as well be in high school. Anyway, onto Wiz. His lyrics aren’t bad, and not holding the song back, but they aren’t exactly moving them along as nice as they should. He still is doing that flex thing a little, but not much. He’s more comfortable being a boss, but not nearly as much as Snoop. But that it, he’s the new up and comer. He’s Young Khalifa for a reason, and it’s even in his character for this song. And that’s another reason why he gets more than a pass, he gets a pat on the back for his performance. Anyway, wait… oh yeah Bruno Mars was on this. Technically I guess. Yeah, he’s not in the video, I didn’t even notice that was him singing until after a couple plays… he’s just here to sing, all right? Nothing more. Anyway, I like the happy piano instrumental, it’s nice. I like the chorus where it’s a chant of people chanting the chorus. The message, it’s actually there. For those anti smoking elitists, this is the kind of song that that makes me hate those people. If this isn’t a damn good message for a song that didn’t mean to have one, I don’t know what is. It’s taking all the fun of friends smoking or drinking having a good time, while not shaking off the bad. It’s like a fond memory, you only remember the good. And I could see somebody reflecting on their past crying to this, I really feel this hit home with somebody. As for the music video, it’s… there. I mean, this is one of those they made a video for the sake of it. I mean it captured the idea of the song, adding some scenes from the movie, but yeah… didn’t help the song, didn’t really hurt it either. I mean it’s not just footage. I liked the intro, I liked it, in that I like average things way. As for the bads of this song, there aren’t a lot. I can’t really think of many music videos in my head which is kind of disappointing, but oh well. That and the Wiz having to try and be hardcore in every song, even in ones he shouldn’t (Tech N9ne’s See Me for example) but fuck the bad, bringing that up in this kind of song isn’t the idea. It’s a dope song about all the good, and it raises even the most depressed bastard’s spirit. And yeah, blunts the size of King Kong’s fingers, god damn.
