 Episode 58 (Sozin’s Comet, Part 1: The Phoenix King) Review

 

Now that’s a title. Anyway, beginning of the end, let’s just dive right in. This is the prep episode before shit goes down. First Zuko is wondering why everyone is so calm when the comet is coming in three days. The group decides maybe they should wait, after all they already lost the war. But Zuko reveals that fire lord Ozai is going to destroy everything. He said the last comet his grandfather destroyed the air nomads, and he’ll in turn destroy the earth kingdom. (I guess the water nation are like nothing at this point) But yeah, after that they take things seriously. They prepare, but something goes wrong. Aang can’t get around the idea of killing the fire lord. Because he’s never killed anyone (Bullshit!) But for story, I understand. He can’t get to this idea. But then in the middle of the night he has a little sleepwalk, and wakes up in the wilderness on a giant rock. Meanwhile the gang goes sees June, who finally returns. She’s the crazy badass chick that has a pet mole thing, sound familiar? And yes, she shows up for a bit, and even fights some Street Fighter characters while she’s at it. And my favorite part of the episode, Azula is made Fire Lord… you don’t know how puzzeled I was when I first watch that. Then Ozai is like, “BUT I ON THE OTHER HAND AM PHOENIX KING!! RULER OF ALL!” And yeah, really epic. Anyway, this episode scored a little less for me. It’s mostly a setup episode, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Nobody wants them to jump into things, especially since the grand finale seems a little rushed even with the four episodes around it. But maybe I feel like I’m giving too many fives, and I’m feeling too generous. But it’s still very nice, I really like it. The beginning of the end, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
