Episode 35 (The Tales of Ba Singe Se) Review

Episode 35 (The Tales of Ba Singe Se) Review

This is arguably my favorite episode in Avatar. And it captured everything I love about Avatar in one episode. It breaks down the episode into different "tales.” The first one goes through Katara and Toph having a girl’s day out, then Iroh in basically the average day for him, Aang helps some animals, Zuko goes on a date, and Momo tries to find Appa. Oh, and Sokka gets in a rap battle of poetry. Anyway, each one I felt was so necessary for the character, and I thought I just love the fact they did an episode like this. My favorite tales go first being Iroh, then Zuko, than Katara and Toph, then Aang, then Sokka, then Momo. I loved Iroh’s story because it really was the point where his character went from side character to one of the best in the show. He was this happy peaceful man that held this sadness in him, and the fact he was doing that thing with the kid, and then helping his mugger get into a good stance, good God it made me love his character. And yes, the end with the song… near tears. Mako, God bless. R.I.P. I’m so happy they would include a memorial in the show, a lot of shows wouldn’t allow that into their world, but no, Avatar had the balls to do it, and I’m happy they included it. As for Zuko’s story, I loved that too. I think it showed that necessary side of Zuko where he’s battling to be normal. Not to mention I thought the whole little romance thing was adorable. That was cute Avatar, good job. As for the Katara and Toph part, that felt like "let’s think of a good idea.” But as a Toph and Katara fan seeing their little friendship get stronger as they drown bullies and toss them around, I felt happy. It showed a little more depth on her character. As for the Aang one, that’s a little more pointless but still cool. It had some really cool animation, and I thought it was a really Aang moment that only an avatar would do. And that zoo was pretty cool. I mean who needs to spend years making a zoo when the Avatar can Earthbend you a new one. As for Sokka’s, I thought that one was just good. I thought it was funny and expressed how Sokka was the fast thinker. It was dope, just not as up to par with the Iroh tale and stuff like that. As for Momo’s, I thought that one was eh. I mean not a lot you can do with Momo, and it had the most story, but still the weakest to me. It was cute, but I was hoping for a little more. But as a whole this episode was such a good idea. The fact that the team could calm down for a moment and have giant character tribute and development was awesome. And although I’m not sure about favorite episode, it’s one of the most memorable, and you are left with a expression that you don’t get again. Episodes like this turn Avatar from a great show into a legendary show.
