Episode 40 (The Crossroads of Destiny) Review

Episode 40 Review (The Crossroads of Destiny)

So here we are at our second of three season finales. And we are closing the book on the season I’m pretty sure is my favorite, so it’s a little sad. And yeah, it’s a pretty damn good end. Azula has basically taken over Ba Sing Se, and then captures Katara and Zuko. So Iroh goes to the team and gives them the scoop, and then they agree to work together. Aang and Iroh go to get Zuko and Katara, and Toph and Sokka go to try and get the king and the bear who got captured earlier in the squabble. And Toph and Sokka get the king pretty easily, but Aang and Iroh’s mission goes a little badly as Azula shows up. And so Zuko comes to his own crossroads of destiny as he must decides the ultimate question of good versus evil. If he’s good he’ll… be a good person and ditch… that’s about it. But if he’s evil he’ll get bitches, money, his dad’s respect, and lots more. Reality everyone. And so he goes with evil, and starts attacking in Aang in one of the best fights in the season, if not the entire show. Probably top three. But in the end the Dai Le show up, and Aang decides to leave Katara, and suddenly do some last minute meditation and try to unlock his inner Avatar. And as he does… he gets killed. No straight up, he gets blasted with lightning and dies. It’s Nick, so I feel it would have been cooler if they let him die a little less PG, but he pretty much died. But its’ real quick, Katara uses her somewhat a little too convenient water that saves his life after they flea from the battle, but at the very heavy cost of Iroh’s capture, and of course Ba Sing Se loses his king, and is now in charge by Azula. No lie, I think aside from the series finale which was pretty damn good, this is her best episode. Just that part where the Dai Le head guy and her were talking, and she made him her bitch just by the way she acted. I mean Azula is such a good villain. She handled business, and was such a threat, it was incredible. She killed the main character, converted Luke Skywalker, took over the illuminati, and can still hang out with her gal pals by the end.
"You beat me at my own game.”
"Don’t flatter yourself, you were never even a player.”
BOOM! Hell yeah Azula, high five to you… or not really, fuck you. But yeah, you’re cool. Seriously she was just in her Earth Kingdom outfit in this episode, and she looked evil as hell in Earth Kingdom colors. And the transformation with Zuko, that’s more overall plot, so for this episode I will say that was a good move at the time, and it worked for the next season. But God, the good guys got destroyed. Seriously, Suki is gone, everyone is destroyed, Aang temporarily died (I guess, I like to think he just got revived) Overall a great season finale and cliff hanger, this really was the big game. They left me excited for more, and I feel bad for people who had to wait… that must have sucked for you. But yeah, great end to a fantastic season.
