Video Game Movies: "Creative Topic" #3

"Creative Topic" #3: Video Game Movies
By now just about everyone has seen a video game based movie. And odds are, it was terrible, or at least bad. Whether it be the Mario Bros. or the Resident Evil movies, people just hate video game based movies. Now on the other hand movies with video games as an element or tool to story like Wreck It Ralph or maybe even Stay Alive which have much better reactions. And why is that? Why do video game movies completely suck! Sure some book based movies are bad, but a lot of them are amazing. Movies based of comics are also usually good like 300 or V for Vendetta. But the people who make good comic book or novel based movies usually care about the product. And books and comics are crushed into one little movie, and they’re good so why can’t you do the same with a video game? A the reason I think is that  a lot of people in the movie industry experience a good comic or novel, and then want to make a high quality movie off it, and do so, no harm done. But with video games it’s not that they want to make a good adaptation of the game, they just see the game sales and say that would will make a lot of money. They don’t want to make a quality product, they want the easy buck of taking a big name title. And the sad thing is that it works no matter what. People who played the game see the movie, all the people who get impressed by an action movie trailer see the movie, and the people who just see every movie coming out see the movie. This is unavoidable, and no matter what makes people money. It’s the simple fact that little to no people in the movie product of video game based movies actually care about that video game it’s based off of. Not to mention these movies continue to be given terrible writers and directors, and the writers are actually worse than the game writers ninety percent of the time. Also video games have a much different pacing than books and movies. Unlike books and movies where the momentum and pacing is like a hill, video games work much different. They have a reward system of missions and then a reward or story, or maybe not, many video games are different in terms of story and pacing. They are a narrative so different from the other media it can’t really be put into a two hour movie. So in the end video game movies just don’t have heart, incorrect pacing, and just happen to have slapped on actors, writers, directors, etc. Eventually I think somebody will care enough to make a good video game movie, but until then I wouldn’t get your hopes up, or expect the next video game movie you get dragged into will actually be good.
