Episode 65 Review (Dancing Leaf, Squirming Sand)

So although episode sixty-five doesn’t start the fight between Sasuke and Gaara, it does pretty much everything it can to hype it. First there is a little reaction to Shikamaru’s fight, and we learn he has a much better chance at becoming a Chunin than Naruto or Neji. Then it’s finally time for Sasuke and Gaara to fight, but of course Sasuke is nowhere in sight. The match gets delayed another ten minutes, and finally, Sasuke shows up, in a new attire and even longer hair no less. Kakashi doesn’t even seem to give much of an excuse for them being late, only apologizing a little. Then we see while Gaara is making his way to the arena, and Naruto and Shikamaru are going up, Gaara is confronted by two people. All this time Gaara is in a really destructive mood. The two men stop Gaara and threaten him to loose the match cause they put high bets on Sasuke. Meanwhile the whole time you like, "Oh, no…” and then Gaara starts just slaughtering them. And I was just like, "I told you not to go there! I told you!” So the two guys died, and to be honest at this point Gaara is just a murderous villain. He needs to die, that’s it. The episode ends and it doesn’t look good for Sasuke, or for Naruto who would fight him if he beat or killed Sasuke. Just saying I wouldn’t make Gaara a Chunin at this point, that is the last guy I want leading my squad. But anyway the episode as a whole I feel didn’t need to be so long. They could have at least started the match, and in the end I feel it could have been better. It’s coming off the momentum of really good episodes, and I feel the momentum carried on enough to give it a low seven. I mean why did it matter Sasuke was late in the first place? How important is that to the story it needed a whole episode for his reveal, and for Gaara to simply walk downstairs. Sure he murdered two people along the way, but you get my point.
