Liar Liar Review

 Liar Liar Review
Starring: Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney, Jennifer Tilly
Director: Tom Shadyac
Year: 1997

Liar Liar is one of the Jim Carrey movies that really let him do whatever he wanted, and became a small classic. And what started me getting into movies and collecting was when I started to watch a bunch of old VHS tapes around my house, and one of those movies was Liar Liar. It had been awhile since I saw the movie, but now that I’ve seen it as a more knowledgeable movie enthusiast, I’d like to review it. Liar Liar follows an attorney, and although he is kind of a dick, he’s a good guy. The one thing holding him back, he has a huge consistency to lie. He lies to get ahead in life, and manages to push his kid aside because of it. Then when the kid uses a magical birthday wish to prevent his father from lying for one day, and that day happens to be one where he has the biggest case of his life, and his son and ex-wife might move far away from him if he doesn’t make it to them in time. The idea is interesting, and one that would fit a Jim Carrey movie. That being said, this is the Jim Carrey show all the way. If you don’t like Jim Carrey’s overdramatic and almost psychotic acting, than you might not like this. He’s not doing it twenty-four seven, but he does do it a lot. Sometimes I was thinking it was a little overused and excessive, but it works. Sure it’s a little much sometimes, but those moments either set up a chuckle or just made me laugh period, so it’s neutral for me on those moments. For instance he went a little crazy with the pen, but I laughed when he yelled out, "The God damn pen is blue!” As far as everyone else in the movie goes, they get the job done, but most of the small people are just there to react to Jim Carrey, so they can’t really stand out. As far as bigger characters go, they get the job done, and you do actually care. For some reason the movie uses this dialogue that feels realistic and it makes you care. Jim Carrey being a smart as in the beginning was actually one of the best moments. The kid on the other hand, I didn’t really like him. I mean he’s a kid, and he acted like a kid, but sometimes I just felt a guy telling him what to do as he just stood there. But you care in the end, so oh well. Also the movie does suck you in, it’s weird, but you care about this court case, you care if this little kid gets to see his father. And the movie could have been a complete dud, but it actually turned out great. This is one of Jim Carrey’s best, and I think that’s why it’s something of a small classic nowadays. Not to mention the moral is bigger than don’t lie and the true shall set you free, blah blah blah. There’s a little moral about justice in the court system and it really kind of sticks just as much as the whole lying thing. It was like this guy changed his whole perspective of life and his job just because he didn’t lie for one day. Not to mention I really loved the climax and resolution, it was about as good as it could have been. Jim Carrey goes from not caring to not taking no for an answer. And I like all the little things. I like Jim Carrey and his relationship with just people around the office and his secretary. And when he’s finally truthful it’s fun to see it do a one-eighty. And it’s a little bit of a comedy with that patch of drama, and you only see that while you’re watching it, or just finishing it. I did laugh, not a whole lot, but enough to say the movie was funny and enjoyable. Liar Liar is a great movie, and one of Jim Carrey’s best performances, if not his best. It was a movie that looked like everyone had fun making, and definitely something I can pick up and watch every once in awhile.

Liar Liar gets a 4/5
Spoilers: I love how Jim Carrey went from the no show dad to actually chasing a plane on the runway. And he actually succeeded! If that was anybody else they’d have just been like "Damn it!” then sighed, and then the movie would have ended. And the ending works, I actually hadn’t seen it coming at all when I first watched it. And Jim Carrey is kind of being screwed by every chick in this movie. His ex-wife doesn’t exactly cut him a break, his boss is dick to him, his secretary bails on him, and even the chick he’s suppose to be helping in court is mean to him, not to mention the lawyer he’s up against. His own son even said, "You’re the only one who makes me feel bad.” Damn, that just hurts, even if it is poorly acted. Anyway I’d like to close it off a moving about the truth. "THE GOD DAMN PEN IS BLUE!!”
