The Hostile Hospital Review

 The Hostile Hospital Review

(Series of Unfortunate Events Book 8)

Author: Lemony Snicket
Year: 2001

The Hostile Hospital is the eighth book in the series of unfortunate events. Somehow even though we are eight books in, you can sum up everything so far pretty quickly. But these books somehow not deep in story still have you gripped oddly while also entertained by Snicket’s over dramatic writings with his characters and himself. In this book he addresses himself a lot, and addresses more of the strange obstacles he faces just to write these books. He mentions himself a lot, and I’m not going to spoil it, but there’s a moment where he physically is in the world for just a moment. His characters are also as ridiculous as ever. This time it’s the volunteers, a reporter, several hospital workers, and several others who are as clueless as they are annoying, but annoying in a good way. But the span of this whole book is actually shorter compared to usual, and rather than spending days somewhere I doubt they even spend a single day. Rather than living with a rude or innocent caretaker, they are defending for themselves for the first time. And as the name of the book may suggest, this is possibly the most hostile situation the children have been in yet. By your half way through the book, you can almost feel like somebody is going to die by the end, and somebody does, but I won’t say who. The hospital is a little bit boring setting, but still fit’s the strange world Snicket has created. The new characters are also very unique, but compared to usual also a little less interesting. The plot of this title is actually more important than the usual, which I think for a series sticking to the usual pace of seven books should mix it up more often. However by the time it’s over you want more, and that puts a little needed extra on the next book. Also Olaf is in this book hardly at all, which is also unusual for this series, but his presence is always around. His assistants however seem to be around every corner. Luckily at times they seem as clueless as the other adults. But in the end the Hostile Hospital feel a little more mixed than usual, but keeps up the pace, and this is a great title for getting the job done. Fans of the series like myself probably won’t be disappointed, but you do want more from book nine, which I’ll hopefully review soon. And with book eight down, the series of unfortunate events reviews are slowly coming to and end, and my next book series reviews will begin. But until then we have five books to go.
The Hostile Hospital gets a 4/5
Spoilers: Okay, Hal was the first guy that the orphans were forced to be mean to. I mean anybody who’s mean to a nice kind old man with bad eyesight is obviously a villain right? But that’s it for the first time the orphans had to do bad to overcome bad, but is that right? Is to kill in order not to be killed the right thing to do? That is rarely ever questioned. Also the fat guy/chick died, and the biggest mystery of the series, we’ll never know what it was. Also I have to say I thought Violet was going to die for a second. We obviously have orphans to spare, and she was about to die, and it was scary. Also the end is one of my favorite endings of this series, because it had you guessing so much. They literally had to sneak into the truck of murderers and had to breath through bullet holes in the trunk. It had you guessing, and it changed the game for the series.
