Final Fantasy X Review

 Final Fantasy X Review
Genre: RPG
Developer: Square
System I played on: Playstation 2
Year: 2001

Fuck Yeah! As of this writing, I unfortunately have only played two Final Fantasy games. My first in the series was XIII, which I bought after seeing videos of it, was in the mood for an excellent RPG and most of all, saw how well it was remarked on a YouTube page. I on the other hand had mixed results, but even restarted after some of my friends had been going on about how good it was. Unfortunately I had mixed results once again, but could easily see why it was such a love or hate game. Later, I bought three games for five bucks, at a garage sale. One of which had the wrong game inside, but because of how good this game was I couldn’t complain. My first time playing the game actually went pretty terribly. I let the game play out, and before hitting start watched the opening segment. Then I hit start, and they showed me the long and unskippable opening segment again! Then I watched the opening intro, and I had to admit that was awesome, but was still a bit confusing. Once I got hands on with my player Tidus, I fucked around with the gameplay for a bit. This got me killed quite easily, and I died. But since I didn’t even make it to a save point, I got to start the entire thing over again, and watched the damn opening segment again! But I have to say, from there on out the game was smooth sailing, with some out of game problems that we’ll get to. Whenever I hear talk of FFX it’s always different. I’ve heard people bash it, or like me love it. I’ve heard people hate the plot, characters, battle system, while I’ve heard others like me who loved the plot, characters, and battle system. The mainest of the main characters who you name is sucked out of his life, and thrown into a confusing place. His generic name is Tidus. Tidus I found a good character, who I was even able to excuse his whining and crying side effect due to his otherwise upbeat loyal self. I also liked his back-story, and found him a nice reflection on my own thoughts. When I was curious, he was, and then together we’d get a explanation of things. Tidus got the job done, and even if not the best character, certainly proved very well once I finished the game. Throughout the game you meet the cast, at a well pace that never throws you into to much confusion. I will do a quick overview on each of the other six main characters. First there is Yuna, and I have to say Yuna is one of my most favorite female roles in gaming. I haven’t seen her in FFX-2 yet, but hopefully it has more of her character. Yuna was dependent, but still struggling to deal with the weight of being such an important person’s daughter, but still takes the responsibility head on. She and Tidus have one of gaming’s highest praised romances, and even though I found something a bit poor within it, I can agree. Yuna is an awesome summoner, can do a shitload of things in battle, and was probably the most used person in my party. I just can’t pick which of her Aoens is my favorite! Next is Wakka, who like Tidus I was shocked when I met in the adult version of her their Kingdom Heart character forms I met previously. Wakka is a high spirited guy, and has a knack to fall heavily on religion since the passing of his brother. He has a lot to cope with, but seems to still always push a smile. He’s likable  and adds a necessary flare to the game’s party. Next is LuLu, the dark magic user. Her character is mysterious and dark, and adds more variety to your team. I personally didn’t find her a huge asset in battle, but she still is another good female role in this game. She is kind despite her sometimes dark attitude at moments, but I wish she would have just a bit more in her back-story and relationships with the other characters. Next is Kimarhi, who is Yuna’s number one protector. He’s made a goal to protect Yuna, but does a good job at not being a control freak. His silence actually seems to help his character, and his back-story is one of the greatest of these people. He helped me a lot in combat, and I couldn’t imagine my team without him. Next up is Rikku, my third favorite character of the game. Rikku is a better version of Vanille of FFXIII and does her job ten times better. She is a joyful and simple Al Bhed girl, and actually isn’t a part of your team for awhile, but when she is in it gets that much better. She’s care free, and still is handy in battle when you need her. She to has a good back-story, and proves to present another strong female role in FFX. I saved the best for last. Recently I watched a video on you tube that marked the top ten sword users in gaming. Do you want to know which FF character that was on, rather than Cloud or Sepiroth (no insult to these gaming icons of course) FUCKING AURON! Auron is the definition of a badass! His calm and serious nature are fucking awesome! He is smart tongued, is the most symbolic of the storyline since he’s dealt with the antagonist before, and has a long relationship with Yuna and Tidus’s fathers, and is fucking awesome again! The red carpet has teeth, bitch! Fucking love Auron, and he’s the main reason I want to play kingdom hearts 2 again. (He makes an appearance) But enough about these characters. The actual plot of the story is pretty stale for a forty-five hour RPG, but I still found it fiddled with fun facts, and cool side stories like learning the Al Bhed language, or finding the messages of Braska within Spira. The three man battle system I found flawless, and is my favorite strategy battle system as of this writing. The level system had me very confused at first, but once I was going, I was golden! But another thing I loved were the boss battles. I think this is the most I’ve ever grinded from boss battles ever, but besides FUCKING Seymour, these hard long battles are made up for when I finally won. Don’t get me wrong Seymour was a great character, I just hated when he wouldn’t move the fuck on! But then there was one time when my progress did slow, when I was on a particular airship, then a Al Bhed man shouted "SIN!” and the camera zoomed into darkness. My first copy of FFX for some reason couldn’t play the video past this moment. I was totally fucked, and had to wait months before I could play again. I waited as my mom said we could one day go to a shop where they clean disks for a dollar, that day never came. Eventually I was in a garage sale near D.C. and found another copy of FFX, this one even had a manual. And it was only a dollar. I was finally able to progress to the end of the game, even if I did get stuck on two bosses in the meantime. But I have to say, this game ending did what no game, book, or movie did before, it made me shed a tear. I’m going to man up and say it! A tear fell down my cheek during this game’s ending! I have no humiliation in saying it, and for being the first game to make me do it says something. I almost cried multiple times in Mass Effect 3, and probably would have if the ending hadn’t sucked, but nope, FFX did it! Now, that being said, is Final Fantasy X a masterpiece? No, it has problems, it wouldn’t have such a mixed fan base feedback if not for that. The characters are sometimes whiny, and the dialogue and voice acting can even be laughably cheesy and stupid at moments. The characters can even sometimes say something a little to self absorbed. And again, the level up system should have been easier to understand in the beginning, and to be honest, this game’s beginning was slow, and could have been better. But do I love the game… does the red carpet have teeth? AURON FOR THE WIN!

Final Fantasy X gets a 5/5

Spoilers: While playing Final Fantasy X, I only discovered my love for it about twenty hours in. Only until then did I realized how much I was into the story and characters. FFX is filled with great moments such as the big fake wedding between Seymour and Yuna, THE END, the big Blitzball game, THE END, Kimarhi returning to the village, THE END, and of course there is that ending. I can’t really think of one really shitty moment other than having to see that opening several times, or maybe Seymour never dying, and maybe the k puzzle sequences. (Granted the puzzle sequences added a needed variety to fifty hour long game) One day I might do a top ten FFX moments, but until then, I’ll let you guys discover all the great moments in this game.
