Case 39 Review

 Case 39 Review
Starring: Renee Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Bradley Cooper
Director: Christian Alvart
Year: 2010

Case 39… because a woman is on her thirty-ninth case. Yes, that’s why the movie has its name. For a quick synopsis, Renee Zellweger works in child services, and she’s a work freak. And she is so under, she has thirty-nine cases. And of course her thirty-ninth case is interesting. She bonds with the child, and after her family tries to burn her alive in the oven (not even joking) she takes care of her. But of course there is a big mystery, and twists and turns to learn about. And if I had to describe it would be… Orphan meets Hide and Seek. Yeah, that’s pretty good. It feels like that movie that that rookie director made to afford something else, but he thought he’d try and make it as best as it could be. And yeah, this movie was filmed in 2006, and didn’t make that much money. And you know when you watch a movie and the little kid is in it, then you see them years later and they’re all grown up, and they’re attractive? Yeah, that happened to me between the time of watching this movie and going to my computer to write this review. And that’s a nice segway into the acting.  And yeah, I know how people say "Kid actors are either shitty or awesome.” But to me it’s more of a director telling them what to do, and usually the quality of the movie is about as good as the actor. And same goes for this. At first when watching it again I thought Jodelle Ferland was awful, but as time progressed it turns out no, she’s way better at acting like a demented child than she is at being an innocent little girl. As far as everyone else, goes, they’re good. Bradley Cooper, Ian McShane, Renee Zellweger, these are some big actors for such a little movie. Acting was good overall, but it was that good where you know they’re not having much fun, and they’re kind of there for a quick paycheck, but hey isn’t most acting like that? And this is a typical suspense horror movie. The style, the story, and even the fucking name of the movie sounds like I’ve heard it fifty times. So all I really asked is to be glued to my seat long enough to have a good time, taken through some turns, and keep me eating my popcorn. Well my popcorn bowl is clean, there’s a dent in my couch, and I definitely went through some twists and turns. We hit point A, to point fucking B, and watched the credits. As far as the movie in reviews go, most people hate it, again I don’t care enough to wonder why. I very much enjoyed watching it each time I did, even this time years later not knowing if I’d like it again or not. But I certainly did, and I had a good time watching. I did start wondering though, that maybe this movie had a message. That maybe they had a view on people who we see doing these evil acts, and maybe on kids who follow vicious cycles in life, and slowly but surely, I felt like these ideas were more just getting denied as the story went on than anything. But raising questions doesn’t hurt. But that’s not why I came, I came to eat popcorn and wonder what happened, and that’s what I did.

Case 39 gets a 3/5

Spoilers: Hmm, so a super power where you can make people see other things? And the way to beat her is you just have to know you’re not actually seeing things… it took her parents ten years to nearly kill her! That’s a terrible super power! In a world of super powers, she might as well be just another normal little girl to Superman! And why didn’t she just make Renee Zellweger feel like she was being electrocuted or something? She might not have lived, but she would have at least killed her! Come on little girl! You’re starting your super villain career off terribly!
