The Sitter Review

 The Sitter Review
Starring: Jonah Hill, Max Records, Ari Graynor
Director: David Gordon Greene
Year: 2011

Sometimes after enjoying some part of media I like to read or watch some reviews of other people. The Sitter is one of those movies that got tons of hate, but I don't really care. I would blame the response I used in the other review that "people are starting to let what they heard on the internet be their own opinion," but for this I can see why people hate it. One, Adventures of Babysitting. Like Due Date I just kept hearing how it was a rip off of the premise of this wonderful 80s movie. I'm sorry, I haven't seen Adventures of Babysitting. But hey, at least this isn't a crappy remake. And it's one movie, it's not like it's a series of movies based off this one idea. Anyway, enough defending, let's talk about why I like this movie. One, I thought it was enjoyable. My opinion on movies are somewhere between how well I think they are, and my enjoyment. But mainly my enjoyment. Do I know this movie is stupid? Yeah, that doesn't mean I can't like it. Anyway, Jonah Hill in this movie is basically a nowhere in life type of person. Then his mom lands him a babysitter job. The three kids are a nightmare, he gets into some adventures (okay, you got me there) as they go hunting for drugs to get to his sort of girlfriend and avoiding a crazy guy. Along the way are a lot of stops, slapstick humor, and a couple growing periods. And to be honest, some like the kids dad wasn't really necessary. A simple "fuck you." would have sufficed. But each of the three kids grow, one just way more than the others. And I think I like that kid the best because he actually despite having the least funny dialogue, and least funny actions, had the most real character conflict. The movie had a decent commentary on a young kid who was fighting "anxiety," let's just say. The other two kids I liked, I just felt some scenes... man they were trying to make them not likable. The girl needed to just once be like, "okay. I understand." That's all I needed. The little kid from El Salvador needed to be like, "Okay. I understand." Anyway, it was funny. Not laugh out loud, tons of comedians in this movie type of funny. But you'll be chuckling along the way, and when you're not laughing you'll at least be interested if not engaged. Or maybe not, people don't like this movie, but fuck I was. Anyway, side characters. There was this drug lord guy, he was awesome. He was ready to become your best friend and kill you the next. Yeah, his brain seems like it was destroyed by drugs years ago, but he just got back from an insane asylum. But a really friendly and happy insane asylum... because there are so many of those. Anyway, the other characters, didn't care enough. Well besides cool black guy from the club, and the chick from Orange is the New Black. They were cool. "Then you ran away like a little bIOtch." I really laughed at that part, it was funny to me. But characters like Jonah Hill's parents, the actual kids parents, they could have been improved. I think a lot of little things could have made this movie better. Not so much time on making sure El Salvador is blowing the shit out of every bathroom he comes across. Also Jonah Hill's sort of girlfriend, she was passable, but with how much screen time she had, I thought she could have been... funny. Like at all. Anyway, was the drug chasing, car chases, pitstops, and other crazy stuff in this movie cool? Yeah, I thought so. It was a simple good movie, that was good at most parts, and that's where it counted. It's was pretty likable. And despite how I said, "Oh, everyone hates this movie!" Everyone I know likes this movie, and that says something. It's just a good movie to me, if not a strong good movie.

The Sitter gets a 3/5
Spoilers: So I think one of most memorable moments in this movie was the whole gay kid arc. And the first time I watched this movie, I was loosely paying attention, I was with people, you know how it is sometimes. And I didn't even realize that part till Jonah Hill said it. It was easily one of the more memorable parts of the movie. Also, I thought the bad guy could have been defeated a little less cheaply than, "oh, Jonah Hill's new black friends beat him up." Also, the night almost ends like a problem waiting to be fixed. Both Jonah Hill's father and kid's father's cars are screwed up, and it's not like Jonah Hill is going to have to pay for that later. Also, I think Jonah Hill gave out like five life lessons in the final twenty minutes of the movie. Way to much going on. Anyway, good movie, other than its problems, I liked it.
