"Creative Topic" #6: Sea of Monsters Trailer 1

My creative topic is the place where I talk just about anything, whether it be a rant, a discussion, or just some random shit that has nothing to do with any entertainment industry. And I just saw the first trailer for the upcoming movie, the Sea of Monsters. And since I want to talk about it, and there’s no other really place for me to do that on the site, I thought this would be perfect! Will I be doing more future trailer breakdowns? Plausibly. I mean I usually don’t keep track of trailers, and only the ones I really really care about get mentioned. The only other ones out that I care about are Kick-Ass 2 and the City of Bones trailer. But for now let’s talk Sea of Monsters. As I might or might not have mentioned on the site before, I’m a Percy Jackson and the Olympians fan boy. (I’ll get the reviews out eventually) I loved the books to death. Then the movie came out (I’ll review it eventually) but to sum it up, I was disappointed. It wasn’t a terrible movie because it was a fun popcorn film for people who didn’t read the books, but for me personally not doing the books justice and not living to a fraction of its potential made the movie pain me, and that ultimately factors. Fable III for instance wasn’t terrible, but it was bad for me because it just hurt. Yes, hurt, as in made me sad. As did the Lightning Thief movie. I’ll talk about it eventually, but they almost wanted to set it up for one movie, and didn’t mention anything that could help make future movies. The one scene that could have helped set up this movie was a deleted scene. Damn you Chris Columbus! You did Harry Potter so much justice, but Percy Jackson? Why!? Anyway, this movie has a new director, and is thankfully mixing things up. Little quirks like Annabeth’s hair are like the book, yes she’s a blond! Still too old, but we’ll live. Hopefully she just won’t be driving any cars. Also the trailer has to fill in story that the Lightning Thief was suppose to do. Clarisse is finally introduced, and so is Dionysus, the Oracle, you know basically everyone that was missing in the last book. Also Camp Half-Blood looks a little better. I didn’t see the hill, they really need to add that, and nobody wore the orange shirt they were suppose to, I’ll live, but at least they looked like the extras were teenagers, and people in their twenties weren’t walking around. Also there wasn’t like a million people, it looked like it could hold just a hundred kids, which is how it’s suppose to be. And the little part with the Oracle looked great, it was how I always imagined it, with the exception of Percy’s age. (Which I guess nobody can fix unless they went for a reboot… which isn’t a bad idea at all) Not only that they set up the plot of Kronos is going to one day come. And that mostly means we’ll get at least one more sequel after this, and since that’s the number everyone signed up for, we’ll at least get a trilogy, and if the next two are better, than that’ll be awesome. I also noticed a lot of little things are in there that Chris Columbus and the people from the first movie would have cut out, like the Hippocampi, which looked really epic by the way. I wasn’t thinking epic in the books, but epic works for me. Lastly I want to talk about the characters. The last movie I let it bug me, but only because they failed to include crucial character points that actually affect the story, like Annabeth and Luke having a love triangle. Columbus didn’t include it. Why? He probably didn’t give a shit about more sequels! And when twelve year old looking timid and shy Grover got changed into a man a near thirty year old black dude who got chicks, it just felt wrong. I mean he wasn’t bad, but when the world was already so wrong, I just couldn’t help but hate it. But now that this movie world is established, and more books qualities look like they’re coming in (hopefully they are) maybe Grover will fit the world. He was comedic relief in the books after all, so in the end it’s similar. And Annabeth is a blond, besides that she looks the same. There’s not a lot you can do with that, but I hope the Siren scene is in there, because I feel that’s one of Annabeth’s best scenes ever, only because it gave her so much depth. And Percy is still Logan Letterman, same as last time, not a lot we can do. But then there are the new characters! First Mr. D. or better known as Dionysus. I saw a picture, and he’s dressed like him, and it looks like we might get to see him come to life after all. Also Nathan Fillion is Hermes… that’s just awesome. Not to mention Clarisse. She in no way resembles Clarisse. It did seem like she’s a big character, so maybe they’ll make it work. But just saying, I don’t want to dismiss that, because I dismissed stuff like that when the Lightning Thief came out. And speaking of not dismissing, Tyson didn’t seem like Tyson. They showed him off, and he looked confused and kind of lost like Tyson, but later he was like, "Awesome!” The hell, we already had one of our guys turned into comedic relief, Tyson doesn’t have to do that to! Tyson is possibly good, but just saying that was one of the flags of this trailer. Also second last flag, Chiron. I know he has a different actor, but he didn’t look like Chiron. And Chiron in the last movie was one of the few things done right! He wasn’t the right color, but at least he seemed like Chiron! And lastly Luke returns. The last movie pretty much left if he was alive open ended in case there was a sequel, but he was basically stabbed through the throat and thrown into the bottom of the ocean… he totally could survive that. I’m glad they didn’t remove him from the plot with how much is already going on, that could have been an easy way out. He’s a character, and looks like a central antagonist, and maybe will get some hype for the next movie for his big finish, or for whenever that’ll happen. And lastly, my last red flag, it’s in 3D. That could be really bad news. I don’t want this movie to be a cash grab, and from what we seen, it could be amazing, or it could suck again! (I’m sorry the last one wasn’t terrible, but I’m making a point) However I did get hyped and intrigued from this trailer, and I feel happy knowing this series may move on, and still may be a good franchise for film. A reboot may be better for a movie (probably not better for sales) but no matter what, I’m going to see Sea of Monsters this August.
