DBZ: The world's Strongest Review (movie 2)

Dragonball Z: The World's Strongest Review
Director: Daisuke Nishio
(movie 2)
Year: 1990

I have just finished the second DBZ movie, probably for the second time I ever watched it. With these movies I would say those are just enough times to review it. This one I did not grow up watching as a kid, but around several years or so when I was a bit of a DBZ freak. This one I like more than the dead zone, as I feel it is more fleshed out, and is little bit better on DBZ movie experience. I think Garlic Jr. is a better character than Dr. Wheelo, but I think the world’s strongest was the better movie. Where the Dead Zone had a vampire-like theme, I think World’s strongest had a mad scientist, almost Frankenstein like theme. I doubt that’s what they were intending, but that’s just what I felt. In this movie, some characters did better than others. Master Roshi was finally put in the spotlight, even if only for a little bit. O-long made an appearance, and Piccolo was actually reduced compared to his usual movie quality performance. I think this movie was more of an even playing field, and just moved more along for story, rather than worrying about little things like certain characters doing well. This had some ups, and some downs. First, I feel it gets stale at some point, and your attention goes somewhere else. Also I hate that some things in this made me question the characters strengths. This takes place after the Saiyan saga, and Gohan gets his ass beat by creatures Master Roshi easily handeled. Some other things I questioned was that Dr. Wheelo was so obsessed with taking Goku’s body, but to me it appeared he could easily kick Goku’s ass, even if in a tank. I mean I like that Dr. Wheelo and his assistant’s motives are to take the body of the strongest fighter on the planet, and I get he doesn’t want to stay in fish tank, but he seems to be able to take over the world already. The antagonists of this movie I do feel are good though. The bio warriors I like that they stay silent, rather than follow the typical gimmicky henchmen, they have cool powers and fights, and do you really need more? I also like Dr. Coachman, as he I think is necessary to Dr. Wheelo’s characters. In a way Coachman is the one who gives the character of Wheelo, as he is somewhat the voice of Wheelo’s motives, and is the person who revived (if revived is the word) Wheelo in with Dragonballs. I think that’s going to close to spoilers, so I’ll stop while I’m ahead. But just know that Wheelo I think has a cool back-story. It actually is in the past, and makes his character. I think one day I might do a DBZ fan fiction that takes place before Dragonball, in a time where Roshi and others are in their prime. If I do that, you know Wheelo and Coachman will be in that. In the end, I don’t hate any of the DBZ movies, and each one I think would be above average at least. The movie has flaws, but no major complaints like most fans have with movies like Bio-Broly and Slug. Besides a random quirky dream like video I’d prefer without, there was no obvious scenes with problem. This isn’t the most memorable DBZ movie, but it certainly is one of those ones that makes it nice to see the characters, and feel the DBZ universe come full circle, while adding flavor like themes like should-be-dead scientists.

DragonBall Z: The World’s Strongest gets a 7/10

Spoilers: About around the final minutes of the movie, Krillin burst high into space, with Earth down below him. (Krillen usually makes nice entrances in the movies) A moment after he gets his ass handed in a single hit by Wheelo. Then Krillen thinks to himself, "Can’t I at least land one good punch?” Thank you world’s strongest for speaking the words in our mind not only during that moment, but countless times during DBZ. Also in world’s strongest, during Coachman’s fall to his death, you learn he is in fact just a robot. (the electricity sparks of the fake suit of skin he wore) Another picture showed the Dr. in the past, attending something that looks like a brain. I don’t know why Wheelo’s brain would be a simple brain in the past, perhaps it wasn’t even Wheelo. But we can assume Wheelo created Coachman, and rather than a partner he was a servant. Also in the movie Wheelo references that he was strong when he had a body. (just not through dialogue) Like Garlic Jr. he could sense, while nobody around him could. Usually those who have sensing abilities are fighters. Not to mention when he was revived, he called on Master Roshi to take the body of the world’s strongest fighter. Roshi had been the world’s strongest fighter during Wheelo’s time, and I think its possible he knew of him, maybe even personally. Also, like I stated in the review, even in the suit, he kicks ass. You can excuse his strength in the suit’s ability, but he knew enough to fucking beat the others up, and I’m guessing if he didn’t know how to fight he would have got his ass kicked. And he uses energy, which takes the power of your brain and body. He probably had the suit readied to use energy because he already knew how to use it. A suit couldn’t teach him how to use some strange power he never had, his brain simply already knew how to use energy when he was alive! At least that’s my theory, if I’m wrong let me know. Also this was in some way the birth of the Spirit Bomb, and it took Wheelo out! I loved that moment, and I like that this was the first full on and (somewhat) full powered spirit bomb.
