Mushu Review (Mulan)
"Hey! Dragon! *Dra-gon*, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing." [hisses]
Mulan: Mushu like many Disney side characters is the wisecracking likable guy played by a very famous celebrity. Eddie Murphy as a Dragon, sounds like Disney. But Like all of the other famous people who do the voice acting gig, as long as their voice is animated and dynamic and fit the character, I don't mind. And yeah, that's exactly what Eddie Murphy did. In the first movie, unlike the second, they balanced him. And he was likable. He wasn't nearly as funny as some other Disney side characters, but he worked. I remember he did make me laugh aloud once with the line, "And what are you, a sheep!" But yeah, that still wasn't histerical. He didn't have many lines, and kind nagged anded groaned a lot, but he did his job. You want him to win. He's everything a side character should do.
Mulan II: I mentioned in my Mulan II Review that Mushu got under my skin. He basically didn't learn anything from the last movie, and learns nothing from this except he messed up by trying to separate Mulan and the guy. He saved the day in the end, and that sort of made up for it. But... ugh. He was in the way, and he was hardly funny. He seemed so much more selfish, but in a different snarky way. He wasn't that bad as it sounds, but he didn't improve his character at all.
Kingdom Hearts Games: In the first Kingdom Hearts game, Mushu was just a cool guy to summon once in awhile. He did have one of the best summoning intros however. In the second, he was basically just a cameo, like a lot of the characters. But you get a little more Mushu, and that's nice.
Overall: Mushu had a pretty decent character design. I think he religns on a lot of moving and facial expressions to make it work, but he looks like he would exist in this world. He's not awkward, and can move and slither in cool ways. Eddie Murphy gave him a good voice. His concept was okay, started as your typical funny guy with something to work for. And he got it... and then Mulan II kind of fucked it up. But he still is one of the main characters in this world, and another nice Disney character.
