The Reptile Room Review

The Reptile Room
(A Series of Unfortunate Events Book 2)
Author: Lemony Snicket
Year:1999

Well, I just finished rereading the reptile room. Like when I reread the bad beginning, I was surprised at how many little hints there were of what’s going to happen. Not only that, but once or twice Snicket just tells you what is going to happen. But it’s not really a spoiler, it’s more like a huge question mark, ready for you to delve further to find more about. But in this, I feel the characters staring to actually form. I know about Violet, Klaus, and Sunny now, so now I feel like there was already good memories about them in the bad beginning. There characters are starting to get better, not to mention it has Uncle Monty. I plan to start reviewing a lot characters from this series since I’m rereading about them first, but Uncle Monty will be first on my list because well… let’s just say I don’t think his character will be making a lot more appearances in the series. But Uncle Monty is good, Mr. Poe is annoying as ever, and not to mention  Count Olaf is even more screwed up in this then he was in the bad beginning. His character isn’t as good as it is later in the series, but he is now a murderous monster from the gecko. One thing I like about this series is that the protagonists and antagonists seem to have a really good rivalry. Through cleverness and skill Olaf and the orphans seem to fight back and back without actually fighting. But is this better than the bad beginning? I would say it’s a tie. The characters and plot seems a lot better in this, but there is this classic feeling about the bad beginning that makes them somehow equal. But I got a feeling about rereading the wide window, and that should be better than these two. But the reptile room is one of the first books I think about the good old days in this series, and that may be because it has one of the few good times in the series, it’s still a good feeling! The reptile room I would say is a nice sequel, and kept up the pace from the last one very well, and did not feel like a rerun of the last one… I do feel like that happens in the series as a whole, for this one book it’s a positive. Also, I felt like in this I was a lot more curious. Mystery is a HUGE theme throughout this series, but in this book I was wondering a lot more than the first book. The first time I read this, I had already seen the movie, but didn’t know much of the story.  But I remember wondering how every thing turned out, and I like when there’s a mystery, and it’s really cool when the mystery was revealed. I felt that in this, also, I really like the ending. I don’t know why, but the ending of the reptile room is one of the most memorable in this series, and that’s good. I hope while rereading the series, the other books are just as fun to reread as this was.

The Reptile Room gets a 3/5

Spoilers: First off, Uncle Monty's death was really sad. That's what Lemony Snicket tells your fairly early on, and I feel it actually helped. The scene where they find his corpse I admit might be a bit graphic for kids, and I think it was better to tell the reader of that actually. Also, the first time I read that the doctor was actually the hook handed man, I was really surprised. I hadn't remembered that from the movie at all, that might have been because I was in sixth grade though. But when I reread it this time, I noticed Snicket described the doctor's hand oddly stiff or still numerous times, which makes me wonder why I never questioned it the first time I read it. Also, the end when Sunny first spoke, I found it really nice, and that the many of the reptiles would be put to death very sad. But the whole part about Uncle Monty being brilliant and wouldn't be remembered for it very emotional for ending of book two out of thirteen.
