Episode 17 Review (White Past: Hidden Ambition)

Just for the sake of doing it, I’m going to try again the technique of the last episode review where I don’t touch my keyboard until the episode is done… and another great episode. The Land Of Waves Arc is finally reaching it’s end, and it’s getting as epic as it can. First Naruto basically destroys the ice mirror’s, and decks Haku so hard he twirls around like a little rag doll. Haku’s mask breaks and right before getting the killing blow Naruto stops realizing he’s the kid from the forest. There’s more action, as Kakashi basically seemingly beat Zabuza by summoning his own hounds and sending them after Zabuza, but the reason he even allowed himself to be cut by Zabuza was to give the scent to the hounds. God I love Kakashi. When he used Zabuza’s line of "I expected better from you,” I literally paused the episode so I could reflect how bad ass that was. That was like when Batman stole Bane’s line in the Dark Knight Rises, but in anime form. How isn’t Kakashi the best character? Anyway besides that we also finally see all of Haku’s back story, and it’s pretty bad ass. He has a long conversation mostly just improving his character. He really went up on the scale of characters several places just from this episode alone, and it’s funny he gets that just as it seems he’s about to die. And sure Zabuza’s a piece of shit (as a person, not a character. Let’s face it he’s really dope too) but Haku doesn’t care. He sees life as giving to those you care about, and he literally gives everything to the dude he cares about. Anyway this is probably in the top three episodes so far list, and definitely going to be one of the best from this arc. It greatly improved Haku and Kakashi, and we got to see more of Nine-Tailed Naruto. It was nothing short of utterly epic, but with a touch of touching side story from Haku and his little sad face.
