Who’s your favorite musician?
Think about them. Are they male or female? What is their skin color? How do
they talk? What is their personality? Now look in the mirror. Do you see any
similarities? Why in music do we have this sense to relate everything. I don’t
think people’s favorite character shows how they are, but their favorite
musician seems to be the opposite. In the rap genre, my favorite genre, it
seems it’s really dominated by males. And most people listening are males. I
remember seeing an internet comment fight about Rihanna being featured on an
Eminem track. And yeah, one person almost seemed like he’d be called a faggot
if he had a female on his iPod. So why is that? How many dudes have dozens of
women in his iPod? Well plenty, but many around me don’t. Nicki Minaj, a female
rapper, the moment made big, almost got pushed to the more pop genre, one where
women are pretty even. And it makes sense since that’s a more even unisex
genre. Then there is genres. How many kids who like a certain genre dress a
certain way? Why do people immediately put themselves away from a certain genre
and say, "That’s not for me.”
or write it off as weird. Why do we do this? Is music this entirely cultural
thing where we assume every a certain person listens to a certain thing, and
don’t want to associate ourselves with that music because of who we are? Why is
this all going on the outside? Why do they orbit somebody their similar to? Why
does every music have an image? I mean, these are just sounds in the end. But
we see a musician, and know who they appeal to, and whose listening. Or we look
at a person, and know what music they like. I mean, musicians are marketers.
And they’re just trying to find audiences with their music. When an artist
"changes,” I don’t think they do, they’re marketing themselves to a new
audience. I think many musicians are wearing a mask, and don’t really mind or
care that they do. But I just don’t know why people do this. I don’t know the
answer to this one, but will say try to know this when you’re listening to
music. You’re genre is better than another person’s by the way. We’re different
people, and listen to different things. Just try to remember not to become what
you’re listening to.
