The tenth annual review of DBZ episodes! As a celebration I’ll try to extend this review longer than usual. In the beginning of the tenth episode Gohan you see really is growing, he’s surviving on his own, getting his own food, and when he sees a snake he calmly moves it aside rather than scream like a little girl like he would have just a couple episodes back. He’s even got a nice little cave to live in! After that there is a flashback of old crying Gohan with Goku, and Goku doesn’t care when Gohan cries at all! He makes some medicine from a leaf, which doesn’t make any sense, but who really cares. Gohan does the same thing by himself, and this again shows how he’s growing up. After that you get a more memorable scene from DBZ, and that’s Yamcha’s baseball scene. Not only was this his first appearance but it shows DBZ superpowers in a more real world setting. It also proves with DBZ powers even the weakest guy in the bunch can be famous and rich! But Yamcha doesn’t seem to like the new job, which actually seems a little out of character for me. But I guess he complains more about it being to easy, which I guess I can see him feeling bored about. But he then cons his boss into giving him twenty thousand to win the game. That’s more Yamcha like, and one of his best DBZ moments for me in season 1, which I think is his probably best season. But Yamcha doesn’t even get to hit, as the players start a fight before he can, and when Yamcha steps into the fight he looks so happy as he’s beating people’s faces in. But soon Krillen pops in and pulls him away to tell him what’s been going on. I really liked that scene, and I found it one of Yamcha’s best episodes because he was actually emotional during it. But soon the episode goes to a bigger part, and that’s the part where Gohan meets the dinosaur. The dinosaur isn’t really emotional like the robot in the last episode, but it’s wounded, and by Gohan raising it back to health tells you more about Gohan rather than the dinosaur. I don’t know how Gohan first hat a robot friend and then a dinosaur friend, as that seems to contradict itself, but again for some reason DBZ has dinosaurs and flying cars in the same time period. (It doesn’t make sense!) Gohan even imagines the dinosaur as a big pet, and hopes after raising it back to health they could be friends. And on the way back to the dinosaur Gohan jumps out of a giant tree! He’s grown tremendously from before, as Gohan couldn’t even get climb down that rock before. He even tries to break a giant rock with less than successful results. He says "Not even a crack!” But as he walks away you see as a crack starts forming, and thus you can see he’s actually getting powerful as well. But as Gohan gets back he sees his pre-historic buddy is fighting the T-Rex from the previous episode. And as the Gohan’s friend is dying he’s just like "I’m not going to let you hurt my friend!” What, he’s literally dying before your eyes! Do something! Gohan then enters the fight before it’s to late, but after a little fight he is knocked out, and in a darker turn his friend gets eaten. I mean that was sad! They were even playing this bright cheerful song as he woke up to find his dead friend! That’s just fucked up! But this does show how Gohan’s growing, and as the announcer says survival of the fittest is the only law of the land. Gohan really feels like a true survivalist when he’s faced with stuff like this, and it shows how he moves on and it really shows a lot about his character. It’s about moving on, and that’s actually a good moral for the episode. It even shows some cool animation as Gohan jumps forward into the sunlight. In the end I find this actually a great episode, and even though it’s not one of the ones I’ll want to watch over and over, I still think it holds a lot for a single episode. The tenth episode was actually really nice and one of better ones from season 1, which holds many great episodes as it is.
