The Roommate Review

 The Roommate Review
Starring: Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Cam Gigandet
Director: Christian E. Christiansen
Year: 2011

I just love this director’s name. It’s got to be the best name of all time. Anyway the first time I saw the Roommate, I rented it, and later got it at Blockbuster for like a buck fifty. A couple months ago I tried watching it for a review but couldn’t, but since it’s movie Monday, I was able to watch again in depth, and will not get the review out. Now first is this a bad movie? Every person I know who doesn’t have terrible movie taste says it’s bad, (ironically those with bad movie taste like it) Also this has like a five on Rotten Tomatoes, so yeah, this movie isn’t really liked. Is it a bad movie? Kinda, yeah. Is it a good movie? Kinda. This is my opinion, so let’s take that into play. If this a review based how good it is, and not how much I like it, then it probably would get a three. But I kind of enjoyed it. But like my Stay Alive review, although I liked parts, a lot of parts bugged me. The beginning of this movie for instance is pretty bad. There are lots of parts that bug me. There’ll be a scene that’s really poorly executed, then there will be a part where the camera zooms in way to much on people’s faces, then there’ll be a scene that seems to put a hole in a character. But I will say at one point in the movie, it does hit a stride, and this stride is sprinkled with poor quality, but I didn’t let to many of the things bug me. And I will say the dialogue in this movie is pretty good. But let’s get all the faults out the way. First I heard a review from JermeyJahns, a guy on Youtube I watch, and he of course hated this movie. But he said one of the main problems of the movie was the main villain wasn’t frightening or intimidating. But I think she’s suppose to be more creepy, and weird, not intimidating. It was suppose to play off of the part of us when we wonder about somebody who is kind of close to us, like a roommate. And she is creepy, and she is weird. That being said, there are points when she’s up against full grown men. And she loses one of those fights, and good villains shouldn’t get their ass kicked by side characters. But one guy she just knees in the balls, and that’s it, he’s done. But that’s just bullshit. His job, his marriage, it was all on the line, and he went down like that, to a little teenage girl none the less. Also this movie does a lot of little annoying things. Bad camera, bad execution, not interesting characters, terrible back-story, and all that. The main villain, she got nominated for best villain on a MTV (just saying that doesn’t mean a fucking thing, half of the winners might as well troll face for an acceptance speech) but she really isn’t that good on paper. She’s a rich chick who’s just bipolar or something, and from knowing multiple bipolar people and seeing Silver Lining’s Playbook, she’s not that messed up. Also there are more annoying parts. Look, this is a slight spoiler, but I don’t care. Later the main chick’s teacher hits on her and tries to have sex with her. But earlier it was almost like she was flirting with the dude! That’s your fault! She’s being all bitchy about it later, but don’t flirt with your married teacher! Also the movie starts a bunch of tiny arcs, all revolving around the main girl. A friend, a teacher, an ex-boyfriend. Then Rebecca (the villain who has just the most frightening name ever) slowly gets rid of them one by one, growing hype as she does so. It’s not a bad way to set up a villain, but she already has so many problems she’s not very likable, especially in some scenes where she just comes across as annoying. Also, I hate the romantic interest in the girl. He’s got that James Franco squint with only half the acting ability. In the end he’s actually not that bad, but I didn’t really like him. But good things? One, the climax of this movie I thought was actually pretty intense, and good for how bad it could have been. Second, although the villain chick is flawed, she does some really creepy things, and does have good moments. Third, it’s one of those movies like Signs. If you break it apart and suck the life from it, it’ll suck. But if you watch the movie, not take it’s scenes apart, it’ll be a decent if less than decent experience. Is that good? No, not really. Worth a buck fifty? Yeah, I’d say so. Worth theater price? Hell no, if I’d spend more than what I paid to see this movie, I’d hate it too. I could go on with good and bad, but I don’t think I have too, you get the idea. I don’t hate the movie, and think a five around rotten tomatoes is a little harsh, but I don’t think it’s that good either. It has overly dramatic scenes, not creative, but aren’t a lot of good movies on the same definition of that?

The Roommate Gets a 2/5

Spoilers: I don’t really ever like a spoiler section in average movies. Anyway, yeah, good climax, I actually liked when the dude knocked her in the face, everyone in the room I watched it with reacted the same way. But an earlier scene between her and that guy she’s like following him as if she’s going to jump him, but that whole scene is pointless, that dude could just punch her and she’d be dead. Also is this chick a lesbian? I’m just wondering, someone I watched it with asked that, and I can’t decide. She makes out with a chick so that’s a pretty good sign. But then again she does that just to be the creepy psycho chick, so there’s that. But maybe she just had a crush on the main girl, or maybe she wanted to be her, or maybe she wanted a sister, all of these are not genuine reasons to kill anybody, and don’t help for a villain but still.
