Zombieland Review

 Zombieland Review
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone
Director: Ruben Fleischer
Year: 2009

We may never understand why we have such a fascination of zombies. Overtime, it seems more and more zombies are becoming more of a fun idea than a terrifying idea. When else are you going to be able to kill thousands to millions of undead minions with no consequence? Not to mention zero rules means zero restrictions, and you can do anything. Yeah, zombies are a good premise, and you don’t need anything more on that. Zombieland I first rented while staying at my aunt and uncle’s house, and I watched it again immediately afterwards. And I could watch it a hundred times over, and still love it. It’s one of those movies that just will not lose longevity. And for those wondering what the zombies are like in this, it’s just straight zombies. They derived from mad cow disease, like many zombie movies, but in the end that’s just something you have to catch while they’re talking, and it’s irrelevant. They’re just fast zombies, and the whole world is pretty much gone to shit, enough there. And I’m not really a big zombie guy, I think anyone who likes entertainment of any media will come across some form of zombies, and they will like at least one, an that’s kind of where I’m at. But this has a draw that surpasses all other zombie movies. And a reason for that, is the characters. I’ve never seen anymore likeable characters in zombie media, not in games, not movies, not anything. With zombie movies they tend to treat the characters like horror movie characters, and they’re toned down boring ass tedious characters. Occasionally somebody in a dramatic point will make execute it better, but to make it a comedy and have likeable characters seems like the best bet. And I wouldn’t say it’s a total comedy, it’s more of a feel good movie that makes you laugh, and most of all have fun. But back to the characters. First there is Tallahassee, a redneck bad ass, and the most likeable guy in the movie, and the owner of so many epic quotes. And who would his partner be? Columbus, a shut in phobia freak who is a little more than the typical loser. Then there the sisters Little Rock and Wichita (none of the characters use their real names). Wichita is the bad ass hot chick, and her sister is a comeback little girl, who is mostly just fun to watch to see a little girl doing what she does. And while the movie plays out, Columbus narrates the movie, and it really works. He has these little rules, and his rules are tips on how to survive the zombie apocalypse, and while the movie is going on they pop up on screen reminding you of them. The characters are extremely likeable, and just watching them on screen is not only hilarious, but just fun. Fun and funny, expect those words a lot in this review. And the idea of the movie is they are trying to get to Pacific Planet, an amusement park. Yeah, and amusement park for a little girl. And along the way there are trust issues, and there is enough going on, don’t worry. The entire movie is a sandbox, and could go anywhere, and that’s one of the fun things about it. If there’s a scene where they go to Bill Murray’s house to get high and chill it fits, if there’s a scene where they go into a shop and just break the shit out of everything in there, it fits. Speaking of scenes, each one is awesome. In the beginning everything is set up, and there is a lot of dialogue, and the dialogue is surprisingly well. There actually is little to no danger where they’re about to die, and in a shit storm until the end of the movie. And in the end, it goes the other way. Little dialogue, lots of zombie killing, but still fun zombie killing. And it has a really kind of sweet ending, and for this movie couldn’t really end much better. Also, the acting is extremely well. Woody Harrelson is the perfect Tallahassee, Emma Stone is the perfect Wichita, Jesse Eisenberg is the perfect Columbus, and whoever played Little Rock was the perfect Little Rock. And whoever played the clown zombie, was the perfect clown zombie! And before watching it, I thought I’d end up giving this movie a 9, or even an 8. But after seeing it now with my brain on, I realized how much I love this movie, and that it’s one of my favorite movies. I just love the writing, and love the giant plaything of a world it all is. And it still has moments where it dives a little bit deeper, much like playing, but knowing at any moment it could go to shit. But every moment feels as good as it could have gone, and these are movies that make me love movies. It’s just a really fun time that also is so clever it feels like more than just that, but it can have fun with itself. Other zombie movies are setting themselves up to in the norm, and going the typical route, and pretty much any time you have zombies getting their heads exploded it’ll be a good enough experience, but this takes it to a level that’s amazing. No, A-fucking-mazing would be the term to describe this movie. It’s a movie that makes you enjoy the little things, whether in real life or Zombieland.

Zombieland gets a 5/5

Spoilers: At one point in the movie Tallahassee pretty much gives a suicide letter by using a bullhorn to attract hundreds of zombies while his buddy saved the day and saved the girl. And that moment when he’s just going ham is just too good. And he lives, which I’m glad he did. This isn’t the movie where you die just because it’s a zombie movie. No, there is no time for character fodder, this is too good for that! And Columbus developed a little, he went from guy who after being with a girl for ten minutes had to throw toilet paper rolls at her to try and live, to getting Emma Stone… yeah doing a pretty good job. And Bill Murray, dammit Columbus how could you! Who watches Ghostbusters and shortly afterwards kills Bill Murray!?
