Episode 35 Review (Mercy)

 Episode 35 Review (Mercy)

It’s all comes down to this. After thirty four episodes, and thirty four reviews of DBZ goodness, the end of the Vegeta Saga. For the thirty fifth annual review of DBZ episodes I plan to soon make a list of the top Saiyan Saga moments, so look for that soon. But back to the episode, Vegeta stands over Gohan, and prepares the attack ready to either kill him or remove his tail, I’m not quite sure. But Gohan is saved by… Yajirobe. Lighting strikes twice! Vegeta is so hurt and his energy is so uncharged he manages to put him down. What if Vegeta actually had died there? What if Yajirobe won the whole god damn thing. It’s odd he made it closer than Piccolo or Tien ever did. But of course Vegeta rises and begins beating the hell out of Yajirobe. Yajirobe was always kind annoying, saying he was a flawed character was an understatement. Everything from his voice to his face bothered me, and there was a strange pleasure of seeing Vegeta beat his ass. But of course Yajirobe by getting his ass beat won, because what he intended happens, and Gohan begins to change. Vegeta is even frustratingly and desperately punching him begging him not to change. Gohan going Great Ape is kind of like Goku’s Kaioken, it’s a last ditch effort of strength that might just harm the Z-warriors more than Vegeta, but because they’re willing to die to win, they obvious must try anyway. But this clearly Vegeta’s problem, as Goku seemingly was able to direct Gohan’s Great Ape power at Vegeta with his telepathic communication. Gohan starts fighting Vegeta, and finally it seems as though the tide has shifted onto Vegeta. He’s mostly run and gun, but then he makes an attempt to slice off Gohan’s tail with a Destructo Disc type thing. It cuts straight through, but in ironic change of events, Gohan in Great Ape form lands onto Vegeta as he’s falling and slowly going back to his original form. At this point Vegeta is finally done. The battle with Goku, fighting off the others who used every trick in the book, getting hit by the spirit bomb, and then fighting a Great Ape, that is where Vegeta finally falls and cannot rise. Although Vegeta’s a bad ass you’ll notice he has many times in DBZ acted a little like a bitch. This is one of them. He calls his ship for retreat. I know that dying is not Vegeta’s do list, but if this were the prideful Vegeta we see later in the series, we’d definitely questioned him leaving the battle right when he reached his limit. One funny thing was when the spaceship was rising the guy moving it was like, "Okay time to move this and claim it never existed.” Didn’t all those news people already get a shit load of footage on that? Either way that’s not important. Back at the battlefield Vegeta crawls to his ship, just trying to live. And the only one standing? Krillin, who got hit about twice during that whole battle. He picks up Yajirobe’s sword and prepares to end it. But of course Goku speaks to Krillin, and tells him to give Vegeta’s mercy. This is Goku’s logic: guy kills all my friends, guy beats the hell out of me and my son and threatened to kill everyone on my home planet, clearly I should let him go so he learns his lesson! But joking aside his speech was very convincing and Goku doesn’t often seem that wise. But Vegeta warns Krillin just as his ship closes he’ll come back, but not as merciful as he. Chills every time. With this the Vegeta finally closes, and although the season still technically has a couple episodes, this is really the end. After a fight that seem so endless and powerful as the fight against Vegeta, all the z-warriors even Yajirobe are either dead or unable to even stand. The Vegeta Saga is a classic, and the first chapter of an epic called DragonBall Z! It closes on a tone of mercy, and I think it went one of the best ways it could have gone, and we slowly approach a much grander chapter, maybe not better, but grander. But for now we close it off on an elite level, not quite hall of fame, but I’ll soon have a review of the whole season one of season one, and I have a feeling that’ll have something a little better.
