The Titan's Curse Review

 The Titan's Curse Review

Author: Rick Riordan
Year: 2007
(Percy Jackson and the Olympians Book 3)

The third installment of the Percy Jackson series is the one I feel most conflicted about with my opinion. With The Lightning Thief, I know how well I think of it. The Sea of Monsters I don't think is 5/5 material, but It's still really great to me. The books after the this one I know will probably get fives as well. But the Titan's Curse I'm right between a four and five. Anyway, let's get the synopsis out of the way. It's winter time, and now Thalia from the last book is part of a team. The guys meet up with some new Half-Bloods, then Annabeth basically gets kidnapped. So the team gets saved by a new group of characters. Together the new group of characters as long as some old ones must save Annabeth, a prisoner god, and as usual, the world. And they even have to overcome a titan. The story is important to the story, and really is a worthy stand alone title. But it feels a little fill in the blank adventure-ish. Don't get me wrong, it's a really bad ass adventure, but some stuff could be better. Anyway, a lot of cool scenes in this, and although the story is probably a B on importance, new characters and character development gets an A. The new brother and sister duo is really good, and the group of characters are really cool. Not to mention Thalia is now part of the team, and she's really cool too. And there is so much character work done for the entire series, it's probably the book's main compliment. There is less time on, fight this random monster, and more this character is probably going to die after this. And there are little things. Like Blackjack, I never would have thought his character was going to come to, but he did. And this book is probably more based on the first time read, because I remember that one being amazing, and every time since not as much. But when I reread the others, those are still really good. And the others things like "Luke was being way too much of a dick in the last book," are gone. I do think some of the general problems in the series are apparent, like "the villain is boring... again." But to be honest, it's one of those stories where it's all about the heroes. And they're just awesome. There is a lot of new characters, and a lot of times that makes it hard to balance it out with the old ones. But Grover still got enough time. I like knowing we don't always have to get a lot of Chiron, or a lot Tyson. I remember saying Sea of Monsters was a shot of adrenaline compared to the Lightning Thief, but this one feels like both. There are moments that feel like so much is happening, and a chapter or two where it gets mellow, and almost boring. A character could have died a chapter or two ago, but now you're in a weird scene with a homeless dude. Anyway, the action scenes hit a lot harder than the last book. But compared to the Sea of Monster's ending that blew me away, this one was kind of just, "Eh, Okay." Especially with how little impact it had on the entire series. Oh, and look at that cover! That is bad ass. Not to mention I've never looked at Dionysus the same after that scene. Anyway, the Titan's Curse, another awesome edition to the series, and a good installment to my current favorite book series.

The Titan's Curse gets a 5/5

Spoilers: So, Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, I didn't see that one coming. One reason I liked rereading this is because in the House of Hades it reveals something about Nico, and looking at it through those eyes was a little different. But the first time I read this I had to put the book down and say really loudly, DAMMMMNNNN! Another thing, Bianca dying, that was sad. That being said, I thought she could have gone out better. I mean I like the toy Hades part, but I just don't know if her dying from mechanical Leo's dad creation is the way to go. A cool monster that was in Atlas and Luke's forces would have been fine. As for Zoe, she went out pretty good. And I like how Annabeth and Percy had those grey streaks in their hair, I thought those were cool things to have in common. Also Rachael Elizabeth Dare was introduced, and at the time of this book, I didn't know what to make of that. But her character became part of the team, and she was really cool later on. Grover had his little Pan thing, and it was good for the time. Other good scenes were the opening, the fight with Atlas, Apollo being introduced, Dionysus' part, and the end scene at the throne room.
