Pokemon X/Y Review

 Pokemon X/Y Review
Genre: RPG
Developer: Game Freak
System I Played On: Nintendo 3DS
Year: 2013

Christmas if fucking awesome. This year I got a 2DS and a copy of Pokemon Y. And yeah, since then there’s been a good amount of Pokemon. If you need my back-story on Pokemon, I’ve given it before. I went back on from Leaf Green, and ever since I’ve been a big fan. Played everything besides Black and White 2 since Pokemon Soul Silver. And this year, with the game going onto a new system, there is a lot of new, and a lot of good. First, Mega-Evolutions are now a thing, and you can evolve old Pokemon in battle, even a legendary Pokemon. (Mewtwo) And yeah, I love the mega-evolution ideas. This allows a whole new layer to Pokemon, allowing so many more possibilities. I mean, possibilities aside, playing as these Pokemon are cool and nostalgic. But mega-evolutions are only the beginning. The 3D world, and 3D battles are amazing. I can’t really say much either than I doubt many people will be able to go back, as the new game-play is so superior to anything previous. As for the story, pretty simple. Team Flare I don’t like, but they do their job. I do like the story with the mega-evolutions and the friends. But with things like a new ending, and seeing the dialogue and all this other new stuff, It proved to me something was possible. Before I don’t think story could really be taken seriously in Pokemon. Although I don’t think I’ll say any of the stories have been bad, I never really took them seriously to a game with real story. Most of the characters I probably couldn’t recognize nowadays. They were boring and not that good. But in this, the game proved to me a story was possible. Although I won’t even say the story was great or anything, but the characters were characters. They felt more real and solid than any I’d met before. Although dialogue and the formula didn’t change drastically, the new style and world proved to me that story was possible. Anyway, there is also the new Pokemon. They’re all right. To be honest, with not many Pokemon around this generation, and me only really liking maybe half, this is probably the weakest generation yet. But unlike previous generations, this one focuses very little on there being new Pokemon, whereas that was the draw for former years. Anyway, there are also new features. Pokemon Amie although mostly just one of those, "oh look at this thing!” things in the game, I thought it was better than most past features. On top of actually seeing your Pokemon move and do things, the new feature allowed you to actually do something with your Pokemon. As for other new things, there is Sky Battling, and hordes of Pokemon. I like both, but neither really felt that relevant in the game. Sky Battling is mostly just fighting in the sky, not really different than any ground match. Hordes are just you fighting really weak Pokemon, and don’t really happen often enough to leave an impact. Also, there are a lot of things that I like they are taking risks for. Like you get two starters, one from the first generation, one from the current. And at the end of the game you get another starter from the current game. Also, roller skates. There bad ass. Moving around diagonally with a joystick, yeah, in Pokemon. Also, another big risk, they’ve added a new type. Fairy types, and yeah, I really like the idea. I don’t know why, but the chart now feels complete, even before when I didn’t know it was missing anything. Also, there is the big Exp. Share system. In previous games, you could give a Pokemon an Exp. Share, and it would also gain experience. It helped when you needed to raise a weak Pokemon. But now you’re entire team gets experience, and to be honest, I was skeptical going in. But going through the story, I had a team for the first time. Usually I just have a couple really strong Pokemon, and the others are ones I caught at the end, like the legendary Pokemon. But for the first time I was switching around my Pokemon, using all six Pokemon I had, really taking full potential. And not to mention, when you catch Pokemon, you still get experience. I’ve wanted that forever, and I finally got it. Another feature, you can finally customize your character. At first I was disappointed, because I saw little room to customize your guy. But later I was relieved, and saw much more items, and was satisfied enough. Also, this was the first time I went online in a Pokemon game. Yeah, so many games, never went online. But with an actually good working 2DS, I was able to connect to the internet, and yeah, trading has been really fun. Things from GTS to Wonder Trade make it really interactive and easy to trade. Haven’t tried battling, but trust me, I’ll get around to it. Anyway, I thought the game overall was amazing. The game gave Pokemon fans exactly what they wanted, and what they needed, if they didn’t know it all. It changed the game up in one big mix up, and brought an amazing product that is the best in the series so far.
