The Real Slim Shady gets a 5/5

The Real Slim Shady is what I consider the first song I truly heard by Eminem. Back in the day, I was slightly exposed to Eminem and his music. I heard some songs, this among them, but back then I hadn’t understood music like I did today, and I still viewed them as only good for listening, and nothing else. However when I first got a laptop, and first began writing on it, I tried to listen to music while writing. On that laptop I couldn’t get internet, and I was extremely limited to music. All except one CD I found, which was just a random compile of songs. One of those songs was the Real Slim Shady. Being that one CD was practically all I had, I listened to this song, a lot. Still back then I wasn’t familiar how music should be, but I still liked the song. As time went on, and I started to get into music a little more, and slowly developed the idea that music is just importantly about being unique and giving ideas, tones and themes, and actually count lyrically. Then I started to listen to Eminem, and then heard the song again and could respect it. And the funny thing is even though I was down right sick of the song from all the times I had to listen to it, I still don’t change it when it comes up on my ipod, and really don’t think I could ever get sick of it. And maybe the biggest reason I like this song is it’s my go to Slim Shady song. Sure My Name Is is a good song, but I prefer this one. Also Eminem makes a lot of drug songs and all types of Slim Shady songs, but I prefer songs where he’s being comedic or like how he is in this song, and making fun of things. I just like songs like We Made You, Without Me, and the Real Slim Shady a lot more than songs like Under the Influence, Kill You, or the many others. Not that they’re really bad, I just prefer these over the other ones, also I think they give better tones, themes, and are much stronger lyrically. Anyway, maybe the reason I consider this the go to Slim Shady song is because the central theme around the song is the central theme around the Slim Shady persona. Just going crazy, and being an asshole, and also fucking insane. He gives example of other people doing this with the part about the fast food guy spitting on onion rings and some others. The chorus is focused on Slim Shady being Slim Shady, and to be honest the chorus is a little repetitive by the end, as it uses it a lot. But the idea in the end is everyone has their own version of a slim shady persona, and this song is the anthem of that. While doing that it has it’s usual loud mouthing and going crazy, and the usual fuck you as well. It has minor themes that songs like Just Lose It has where why not go crazy, everything is already crazy anyway like the part about the discovery channel. But this is more direct and detailed. Anyway the music video of this song I feel is also really good, especially the part in the insane nursing home and the army of Slim Shadys. The song is also funny and definitely hits hard on the theme. The sound I feel is catchy, but it’s nothing to brag about. But it’s still clever, and a would probably hit somewhere in my current top ten songs by Eminem, and my favorite Slim Shady song.
