Naruto: Season Two Review
I have recently completed the reviews of every episode in Naruto season two. I gave the last season a solid nine, but this one you might notice I’m only giving an eight. And that’s not to say that this season isn’t higher in content of quality, or has more moments. But the last season the show was still fresh, and although it felt choppy at moments, it really got more for me. It was still new, it had the entire saga of the land of waves, and I was only thirty five episodes. At this point it’s a long anime, and I feel it has to up the quality a little bit. And although I was entertained just about the entire season, and many episodes were eights, nines, and even a ten. But there are so many sevens in the season, and at one point I was getting really tired of everything going on. And it was near the final fight, and that’s a bad thing. But of course when that fight came, then it got three nines in a row, and I think if the season ended around that time, it would have been better, but instead it had a few more sevens thrown in, and that didn’t really help a lot. Although I still love the season, and that being said the cast on terms of quality and quantity is like tripled. Although a lot of characters are introduced in the Forest of Death exam, they really aren’t who they really are until later. For instance Shikamaru who is my favorite character was actually annoying in any moments in season one, but when he fights Temari in episode sixty four, he has some of the quickest character growth ever, and I gave that episode a ten. And that’s just one character, other characters like Lee, Neji, Gaara, and even the old characters grow a lot in this season. And this is also where the series starts to get epic. The Chunin Exam preliminaries, the third exam, and the attack on leaf village are all in this. If it didn’t have a slow pacing holding it back, unneeded story that turns into info, and just so many sevens, it might have gotten a nine. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a great season, and held a good pacing although I felt taking too long. The characters, the story, all of it is still great. That being said not every character is fulfilling up to their full potential. Sakura in the last season had a few great moments, and had the potential to raise herself up to the rest of the good characters, but she kind of falls flat, and even annoyed me at moments. Despite her fight with Ino was really good, she still wasn’t enough. Although maybe at the pacing of a manga where you would generally overlook this, for an anime it takes way too long between her development moments. Sasuke also did that. He had some emo moments in the last season, but at this point some moments got on my nerves. It wasn’t like he was sulking twenty-four-seven, it’s just he had some moments I could do without. But one thing that did get a lot better were the villains. Replacing Zabuza and Haku are Neji and Gaara. Neji is more I guess a rival as he isn’t really a villain. He is simple who Naruto fights in the third exam, but he does antagonize the protagonists, so he is still a enemy. He has his own little arc within the arc, and it’s a little above Zabuza or Haku, and Gaara himself is better probably than all these characters, but not until the end. Like the other two they realized the wrong of their ways and can almost be looked at like a anti-villain, except (spoiler alert) except they survive. And as you can guess they’ll return, and most likely grow, and even turn into protagonists. This tactic worked twice, and works even better when they turn into central characters for the story. Although with Zabuza showing a respect of how a villain can actually have a hidden emotional side, and showing any respect to what a ninja is, even though I think everyone is aware there is nothing to do with actual ninjas on this show. Also since they are in a tournament style for a large portion of this time, there is a lot of fighting. And I mean a lot. I might do a top ten fights of season two, but just know a lot of them are good, and do have actual story provoking moments, and the ones that are there for filling a tournament aren’t that long at all. Some actual unneeded fights don’t even exist like Shino and Kankuro, but later they do still deck it out, but with an actual purpose. I’m not sure if that one will make it though. Also new characters and possibilities for future arcs grow. Jiraiya for instance is a great character, and could open a lot of possibilities, and Orochimaru grows a lot, and is up there for best villain so far. (definitely not my favorite however) Gaara and his siblings are introduced, and they all work for their roles, Gaara could also have a future for an entirely new arc based upon him when he already is the center of this one. And I think raising characters like Lee, Hinata, Shikamaru, that really did raise the show onto a whole new level. And although I think the last season was a little better, this one is still phenomenal, and probably has more quality that the last one, it just has an entirely new shape and form, so I have to review it according to that. It’s still really good, and for a long anime it really is still likable for me. I can see why people who don’t like long anime or the big three hate it, but I like it. In fact I think it’s great, but it is still far from perfect. Let’s hope season three is even better than the last.
