 Andrew Detmer (Chronicle) Review

"I'm An Apex Predator..."

SPOILERS

Synopsis: Andrew is the main character of Chronicle, a movie about teenaged kids who get the super powers of telekinesis. And like I said in my review of Chronicle, he’s like the kid who shoots up a school getting super powers. Being socially awkward, having an alcoholic dad, a mom who is about to die from disease, it all gets to little Andrew. Then he gets super powers and some friends, then it all seems to be going good. But then one little twist and we have a kid flying around the city throwing cars around. And each kid that had super powers works a little bit differently, and Andrew is good at complex things. He can put legos together, type on a computer, small things like that that would take careful use. And Andrew is that one kid who is getting a kick at watching a bug squirm. He first (possibly) accidentally throws a car into a lake, then after that he gets a little more careful. Then one slip, and BOOM. He accidentally kills Steve, who is another character for another day. Also, Andrew films his life, even after getting super powers. This may have been an excuse for this movie to be filmed first person shot, but Andrew’s weird, that’s a weird person idea, it fits enough. But the camera is a barrier between him and the world, and as he said, maybe he wants a barrier. During the movie he’s floating this thing around, ignoring phone calls and his dad being his dad, you really seeing him obsessing over it a little bit. Kind of weird considering since he I thought would more likely just want to ignore his entire like it never happened. And in the end Andrew does die, as he gets carried away with his strength and becomes a pure monster, his own cousin had to bring him down, and push him off of his pedestal. But damn, he was a full fledged super villain  destroying a city. He started as a kid getting smacked around by his dad, by the end he’s blowing up hospitals. He doesn’t hold the movie together, but he is the star, and he still has big shoes to fill, and he lands them wonderfully. If anything, you want more of him. I don’t know if they’ll be able to bring Andrew back in Chronicle 2 if it ever comes back, but if so, I’ll edit the review and add my thoughts on him in Chronicle 2.
