First song I heard by Macklemore was Thrift Shop, which I have a review up for those who want to know my opinion. Then Can’t Hold Us, the happy follow up that was definitely good, but not exactly breaking ground from the last one. And now Same Love, and this is the song where I sit back as a critic and just respect the song. In the last song I said I didn’t really like Macklemore, but I respect him for what he’s done, and how he’s done this, and I respect him all the more. Same Love is an obvious pro gay marriage song, and one hundred percent pro gay marriage. And it does a good job at not shoving it down your throat too. And never before in a song would I have to say my opinion on gay marriage, but I’m pro. I live in a country that believes in the right to do what you want, and a lot of us wouldn’t be here if not for freedom of religion, so regardless of your religion, I think gay marriage should be legalized, and shouldn’t be held back because of a book. That being said I’m not exactly pro marriage either, so if there isn’t a reason why I say gay people shouldn’t get married, that would be it. Anyway, the song is very slow, and you get all the lyrics first time, which I feel is good. This isn’t the song you’ll listen to in a club or driving, you’ll check it out, and just nod your head at how good it is as an art. And the other day this came up on my iPod, and I stopped to listen to the whole thing, and if I can do that just while doing nothing, I feel it’s a song worth listening to. And at least it’s not boring. Usually that’s what’s these are, but the message and lyrics are so attention grabbing, you’ll listen. And the hook is this very sweet and melody like. And the instrumental is mostly piano, and sounds good. It’s a good sounding song, mostly due to the hook, and it gets credit for that. However, a good amount of what I’ve seen in Macklemore’s song, he sounds to much like an average rapper, and he kind of sounds like one in this. But since I’m guessing this song was made before he blew up in both pop and rap genres, he’ll probably sound really different by the next album. And I actually heard this on the radio, so maybe people are just really grabbing Macklemore’s music regardless of what it is. Not that this is a bad song, just not a song to put on your radio station. Or maybe it is, fuck, what the hell is the radio doing nowadays? Also, this is one of the most powering music videos I have ever seen. Like Jesus, Macklemore isn’t even in the god damn thing, and this is the point where he should be trying to shove his face on everything. I don’t care what your opinion is, if that let’s you think this song sucks, then that kind of baffles me. I’ve heard songs I disagree with the message before, but I can’t deny they’re good songs. I’d rather have a song with a message that I hate then a song with no message at all. And this isn’t a song I’ll listen to a lot, or go to listen that much. But since opinion is raised by how well we think a product is, and I think from a critic standpoint, this is a fantastic song, then yes, I really like it. Normally I’m complain about the lyrics or lack of messages on songs, but look how well this one is doing. If anything this song is only being driven by message, and holy shit, when does that happen? Ultimately this song earns my respect, and it’s one of those songs you just stop, listen, and that’s it. I do feel like it could have been better, and Macklemore could have done a little more work. A couple more nails on the head to prove his point, just sounding better in the verses. And I like theme of moving forward, I thought that’s as best a conclusion you can give. It’s about just moving forward, rather than staying on pause, and I like that. A song about approving gay marriage in a genre where faggot can be found in probably an almost limitless amount. Yeah, that kind of shows more balls then the others.
