With chapter four, we have the newly introduced Kyoshi warriors. Team Avatar lands in a new place, and there is a lake filled with these sea monster type things that Aang rides, but turns out there is also a giant sea serpent in the water as well called the Unagi. And a village who’s power is the Kyoshi Warriors (female warriors under the influence of a past Avatar) take Aang and the others back hostage. Aang reveals he’s the Avatar, and suddenly it’s a celebration, and Aang is basically the coolest of the cool. He is showing off, and trying to force Katara to like him like the other girls in the village do. And he gets the bright idea to ride the Unagi in order to impress her. Meanwhile Sokka is having a sexist theme of the episode, proving he is stronger than the Kyoshi Warriors, when they are actually much more skilled than he is. He rather than being stubborn admits his errors, and even asks to be taken under their training. Than after Katara saving Aang from the Unagi, Zuko and his troops show up, and they burn the village. Seeing he must run in order to save the village, Aang and the rest flee, while Sokka and Suki (the Kyoshi Warrior showing Sokka up) have a romantic interest moment, then leave. But seeing he can’t leave the village the way it was, Aang quickly grabs the Unagi, sprays out all the fire in the village, and still manages to escape. (The Unagi I guess isn’t as dangerous as it looks) In the end you could say this was filler, but is it? Hell no, later in the series this all makes huge plot points, and even if so it’s really entertaining. You can’t knock filler for being filler, and if this is filler than I like some filler. This is a great episode, grows the characters (even if showing them from a middle school plot perspective) and they in the end land another solid episode.
