Episode 21 Review (The Avatar State)

Aang's spirit Episode 21 Review (The Avatar State)

Twenty-one. I always lookout for the twenty-first episode of each series. And let’s just say for Avatar, it’s a fantastic episode, and a hell of a way to start the season. Not much has happened. First I’ll tell what happened with Aang’s side. The team is given gifts before leaving a random ship they’re cruising on. (aside from Sokka) And they’re on their way to start Earthbending and stop for directions to Omashu (Bumi’s place) at this Earthbending place. And the leader is crazy. He wants the Avatar State, and will use it at any means necessary. So the next day he just goes after Aang, and tries to just kill him basically. But as Katara comes out to help, he uses her to draw the state out. So he buries her! Aang is tearing up, it’s fucked up. Then as he’s just going ape shit, it tells us once he is in this state, if he is killed, the Avatar cycle ends. FOREVER. And the team leaves, agreeing that the Avatar thing is nothing to play with. Sokka even just kind of just knocks the guy out like he was no big deal. And the Avatar State isn’t just a Super Saiyan transformation type thing. It has consequence, and he needs emotion to go into it. It’s a transformation that isn’t just cheap, you know? I feel this one is reasonable in this world, and it’s not like, "Oh I can randomly do this ultimate technique.” Good stuff going on there. And on the bad people side of things, we have our new enemy, Azula. And yes, she is bad ass. "Does the tides command this ship?” And yes, she meets Zuko and says he’s wanted home. But soon Zuko finds out she is just trying to take him captured, and yes, they have a nice big ass fight. And for the first time Azula is using lighting, which isn’t explained, but it is bad ass. And then Iroh steps in, and then redirects her lightning. He hits her overboard and the two escape. They then cut their hair (Zuko a lot more than Iroh) and begin their new lives away from the Fire Nation. And all is very dope, and very awesome. Just saying, this is one of the best episodes yet, if not the best. What better way to start a season then canceling out this Avatar’s State’s unbeatable power, brining in a new villain, cutting Iroh and Zuko from the fire nation, and just being really cool?
