Infamous: Second Son Review

 Infamous: Second Son Review

Genre: Action-Adventure

Developer: Sucker Punch

System I Played On: PS4

Year: 2014

About a week ago, for my seventeenth birthday I had the ultimate pleasure of receiving a Playstation 4. And with it, a game that came out on the same day as my birthday, which is Infamous: Second Son. And before I go in, first I haven’t played any other infamous game. I’m new, but that hardly affected my experience at all. Second, this review will be completely fucking biased. Getting this with a new console, on my birthday, and I was eye this game because the idea of getting a next gen console was in my mind. But yes, onto the game. The new Infamous takes on a new character Delsin, kind of a punk kid with a cop for a brother, who just stumbles on some bad ass super powers. But the big bad D.U.P stands in his way, a group making his kind to be terrorists. So Delsin while doing the classic deciding between good and evil will face the D.U.P., meet some new friends, get some powers, and most importantly, have a shitload of fun. And nothing against the story, but the best compliment I can give this game is it has hit fun on an amazing level. Controlling powers, fighting, missions, it is just a damn good time. And for the story, it’s not held back in the slightest. It’s almost like games nowadays have to have a minimum amount of story if it’s counting on a single player experience. And I’m fine with that, and I want this game to be an example of a clean cut good story. Nothing super amazing or some engrossing Final Fantasy epic, no minimal Call of Duty shooter 12, just where it’s comfortable. Every character is interesting, and I mean every one. And each are detailed in their own way. The little touches they have add a lot. From Delsin’s love for graffiti to the main boss’s evil cutthroat frown. But the combat, that’s what I would like to stress the most. Going from point A to point B has never been more fun in any experience for me. Fighting bad guys and how you handle yourself makes who you are. I went good, and my brother went bad. Side by side I think we both had awesome experiences. But if there is one disadvantage to the powers is it feels sloppier at the end, where as it was the opposite in the beginning. First you get one, and I didn’t know you get any others. But I did, but it didn’t defeat the first one, however was extremely better. Then that happened again, and the first power that I thought was so bad ass was like nothing. The powers and just the fact that enemies are getting so strong you have to use the other powers makes it feel sloppier. And while we’re on a negative side, I’ll get it all out. My second biggest problem is the city. It’s gorgeous, and it’s wonderfully detailed. But it has no character. Seattle may have given a cool look, and although the size is pretty damn big at times, it’s practically the same exact place aside from the beginning of the game. But when I say the game is pretty, I mean that, and not just in the “it’s a nice looking next gen game” sort of way. First, every color is beautiful. From the tags you leave around the city, to the color of the powers as they flash around the screen. It all wows you. To the character’s face to the movement, it all is eye candy, and I’ll remember how taken back I was probably whenever I look at the game on my shelf. And the amount of destruction is a perfect moderate between enough to tell a lot is happening, and not covering your screen with crazy shit. In fact, perfect moderation seems to be a consistent theme. The difficulty of the game I found right in my comfort zone. I was challenged, and died a good amount. But I’d usually get it every other time, and find ways around to win. And sure it’s a lot of the time run, attack, run behind cover, repeat, it’s fun as hell, and not an insult in anyway. Run and tag ultimately is what a lot of combat is in everything. Ultimately, this game was just an experience, one I can’t forget. Impressing me like this, that was a huge part. But again, the new childhood wonder of getting it with a system, and FINALLY BEING ABLE TO FINISH A DAMN GAME was a big part of it. It may have been at the right place and time for me, but it exceled beyond that on an infamous level.

Infamous: Second Son gets a 5/5

Spoilers: Ah, Alberto Del Rio died. I’m referring to Delsin’s brother by the way. And yes, I kind of expected it, but it was well handled. And I’ve seen both endings, and they’re both really good. Although I can’t kill the Akoma or whatever they are, they’re family. I mean when a woman gets out of a wheelchair to slam the door in your face, that’s when you know you fucked up. But I did love going through this game, from the quests with Fetch and Eugene to the wonderful opening that I just couldn’t stop staring at. So damn good.
