The Ersatz Elevator Review

The Ersatz Elevator Review
(Series of Unfortunate Events book 6)
Author: Lemony Snicket
Year: 2001

All right, this particular review series has been held off for a little bit, I just haven’t been reading as much. But today I was finally able to get around to finishing the Ersatz Elevator. First I just want to mention something that I’ll probably mention when I do a review on the series as a whole, but these books have so many themes around them it gets really crazy sometimes. We’ve gone through depressing mills, disgusting houses, fascinating  reptile rooms, murky beaches, uncivilized schools, and now we’re in a mysterious apartment complex. The apartment isn’t as memorable, but how it begins as a dark lightless place to the home of the ersatz elevator it really becomes a good setting. The Baudelaires try to solve where their friends are while also try finding out what Olaf is up to. Also their new caretakers are a lot different than before. Usually they are around for one time, then either killed, or if their a bad caretaker they aren’t to be seen again. This one doesn’t follow that idea at all, and you’ll have to read it to learn what they do. Also the whole what is in and what isn’t is actually very entertaining and is a funny over the top way of saying why do people like things because they are popular. Lemony Snicket has many little messages hidden within in a comedic ridiculousness within his characters, somewhat like South Park, and they really help his writers more than you at first realize. The Ersatz Elevator is better than the rest of the series editions so far because it keeps up the little momentum going through the series, and learned it can’t be a copy and paste version of the old books anymore. From this point on Lemony has to keep up the idea the series must move as a whole, and must mix up more. This book series is like jumping over hurdles. That slowly get bigger and bigger, and as it gets bigger  you really get into it. And so much so that with the last hurdle the series is finally at the point where I can consider the titles greatness.
The Ersatz Elevator gets a 4/5

Spoilers: Okay, first I want to talk about Esme. Esme the first time I read this completely flipped everything about her in a single action, and two really black pages. Betrayal from a guardian wasn’t really seen before, and I just thought Esme was a bad snooty guardian, but she did enough to land a permanent character. Also I think the moment from when she pushed the kids to the end of the book is what makes this a great book. It really is a big moment in the series and possibly one of the best. I just remember the kids opened the hatch to the burned Baudelaire mansion so vividly, and the first time I read I was really shocked and it was like my brain blew up on impact with questions. Most of them were answered.
