Now, most wouldn’t call this a
movie. Some wouldn’t call stand up movies movies at all. Then there’s this, and
this isn’t stand up comedy. Or at least I wouldn’t say it is. This is comedy,
music, theatre, parody, and just about anything in between. So let’s call it a
really nice pile up of awesomeness in one special that we’ll count as a movie
in our movie reviews. Anyway, Bo Burnham was a guy that became big on the early
Youtube days by playing small songs. And my brother showed me them when I was
young, but I didn’t really listen to music back then. Then later, on a late
night, I watched his comedy special Words, Words, Words, and that pretty
impressed. I remember keeping it along with several other special things
recorded on my TV for a long time. Then when I started getting music, I got
some of his old songs. Then I saw his advertisement for this, and was pretty
excited. And I loved this special. His personality and style from the previous
special has really narrowed in on his new stage performance, unless he in real
life actually got more quirky. Both are pretty possible. But his way of telling
jokes and personality are unlike any standup person I’ve seen, and all of his
jokes although aren’t laugh out loud, are funny and witty. And yeah, I laughed
out loud plenty of times. And even when he doesn’t make a joke, and makes room
for more serious messages, you still nod your head. And his messages aren’t
super deep or special, there just the right amount. You can get it pretty
easily. But his jokes and messages do take some brain, and don’t hold your
hand, or cater to anyone. And I do like each of his songs. However tracks like
Left Brain, Right Brain, Repeat Stuff, & From God’s Perspective out due the
others. (Look this is starting to sound like my movie reviews) And I like #Deep
(yeah, the name tells enough) but it wasn’t that great. Then there was We Think
We Know You, which although cool and original, took up enough time to do two
songs, which in a forty-five minute special, can take a little too long.
Anyway, I still like all the songs, and none ever just watching it now was I
like, "Oh, not this one!” Anyway, there are a bunch of little things I like
about the special as well. Just being self aware, that goes a long way. Also,
he’s using lights and sound affects in a way I don’t think anyone’s used quite
like, and its very useful. The little jokes about his dad that kept coming in,
that was probably the best run on joke I’ve heard in awhile. Also, the small
part where he was about to go into a song, but flipped that on its head, I
loved it. What Did I Do Last Night, keep that part in mind when watching,
because it really I think represented a lot of this whole special, and really
hit my funny bone. Anyway, watching this special is probably one of best
cinematic forty-some minutes of my year, and I really could see myself coming
back and watching every once in awhile, and would eventually like to find a DVD
or CD (of the album) eventually. It’s weird, and isn’t for everybody, but what
creative thing isn’t? If it’s a late night and you want some smart quirky
comedy from a guy whose father tells him he acts to flamboyant on stage, and he
throws confetti at him, check this out, I highly recommend it. I actually
enjoyed this more than many movies, even good movies. I thought this was a weak
if not solid four, and for a stand up movie, that’s pretty damn good.
