Episode 15 Review (Bato of the Water Tribe)

Episode 15 Review (Bato of the Water Tribe)

Okay, why is this episode named after Bato? It’s not like Jet’s episode, it’s not about him! But anyway. First we get a flashback to kid Sokka, and he is so adorable. He wants to go with his father and fight, despite only being a very small child. And his father tells him real men go where they’re needed most, and not just saying he’s too young. And they happen to stumble into Bato, a water tribe warrior who was injured and had to stay behind. And he Sokka and Katara have these good talks, and Aang is kind of being excluded. And then there is one of my favorite parts of the episode, a coming of age ritual where you usually dodge ice, but in this case rocks, and it’s suppose to be Sokka getting something he couldn’t as a kid. And he charges it head first, and without getting cocky, does more than he needs to, and I think that’s a great part. And meanwhile Aang was suppose to deliver this map leading to the father that he got a little too conveniently. And no he doesn’t, because he doesn’t want them to ditch him. And he shows it to him as he’s literally made the symbol of trust. But Katara and Sokka and Bato go away, and they just seem to be really betrayed by Aang, and when Sokka was in his big moment, I can get that, but I feel ditching the Avatar was a little much. They run into trouble later, and they could easily have just got in an argument, not left each other, and then the trouble happens. But as they split Zuko who had been busy in this episode struck. He met this tracker chick who has this monster that can really snuff out anything. And they use Katara’s necklace to find her, and once she’s in trouble Aang comes in, and nice climax. Zuko and Aang have their best fight yet, and even though Zuko once again kind of got his ass kicked, it was so cool. They were fighting on this well thing, and they were moving in good choreographed  moves. And Appa actually fights the other monster, and he loses. Yeah, that giant motherfucker, he lost. Overall, really great climax, and the perfume thing was clever. Overall, I thought it was another good episode. I just feel the whole thing with Aang and the others is kind of forced, these characters would have to do more to actually be that on opposite ends. But there were good moments, the downfalls I can look over, and it overall is a success.
