So episode fifty-three is the introduction to the very… different character Jiraiya. Naruto basically wants Jiraiya to be his teacher because he’s impressed with his power, but Jiraiya is not interested in that at all, but rather getting "research” for his new book. Research is codename for hitting on chicks. Easy to say this is one of those quirky and more weird episodes. Jiraiya was more funny with Naruto than when he hit on chicks, and to be honest I didn’t really buy the whole perverted thing. When Master Roshi makes those kind of jokes I buy them, and they’re over quickly. With Jiraiya they’re longer, are executed a little strangely, and I that scene with Naruto and the sexy jutsu was just kind of creepy. But soon Jiraiya says he’ll train Naruto, and we do get the impression he’s strong. He sees Naruto’s problem with walking on water, and sees the seal Orochimaru placed on him. He says that’s the problem, and the fox and Naruto’s chakra are mixing unstably. He tricks Naruto into letting him release the seal, and Naruto tries again, getting it at once. Naruto and Jiraiya after that soon get along and seemingly are kind of like friends. Then the episode ends as Ebisu walks up to Jiraiya, saying how the Hokage have been looking for him. He apparently is a strong ninja, and left the leaf village, but has come back. Then the episode ends as it is revealed he is one of the three Sannin, which are three legendary ninja, one of the others is Orochimaru. In the end I say it’s a above average episode. It’s good they started the Naruto and Jiraiya thing, but I think one of themes of the episode was being a pervert, which isn’t a good theme for the episode. I don’t like anime when it’s too quirky, but I can say this gave personality to Jiraiya and Naruto, plus their relationship, and I feel opened the stage for a good duo.
